Colt Second Model Dragoon
Percussion Revolver - Serial no. 6293,
44 cal., 7 1/2 inch part octagon bbl., blue/
casehardened/brass finish, varnished
walnut grips. This revolver is extraordinary
in several ways:
As serial number 6293, it is the earliest
known Second Model Dragoon revolver,
and we believe it to be the first. Most
Second Model Dragoon revolvers are
in the 8000-10700 range. This model is
one of the rarest of the Colt percussion
revolvers: only an estimated 2,700 were
manufactured. For comparison, around
7,000 of the First Model Dragoons and
10,500 Third Model Dragoons were
made. They featured the squareback
trigger guards seen on the First Model
Dragoons but had the improved
rectangular cylinder stops making them
very attractive transition pieces. This
incredible revolver also features the rare
and highly desirable “U.S. DRAGOONS”
marking on the cylinder rather than the
more common “MODEL U.S.M.R.” marking.
It also comes in a mahogany case with
a set of accessories and has been well-
known for a long time as it past through
several very noteworthy collections and
won an NRA silver medal. Above all, it is
in extremely high condition for a revolver
from c. 1849; it is essentially “as-issued”
condition! A true benchmark exmaple!
