Semi-Automatic Carbine with Matching Shoulder Stock - Serial no. 625, 7.63 mm Mauser
auto cal., 15 3/4 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is a rare example of an early Mauser
Model 1896 carbine with its original matching numbered shoulder stock, one of approximately
less than 1,100 total of these Mauser carbines manufactured in a variety of configurations in the
early 1900s by the Mauser factory, with the milled frame large ring hammer examples such as this one found in the approximate
310-910 serial range, according to information on page 194 of “The Broomhandle Pistol 1896-1936” by Erickson and Pate. A nearly
identical example only one production number away with serial number 624 is shown on page 200 of the aforementioned book. One
very noticeable feature of this rare carbine is that it has an elongated chamber area. It has a 15 3/4 inch barrel, milled frame panels,
large ring hammer, long extractor, single lug firing pin and earlier type safety. The top of the chamber area is marked “WAFFENFABRIK/
MAUSER/OBERNDORF A/N”. The left side of the barrel extension has the serial number “625” which is also stamped on the lower left side
of the frame and grip frame/stock lug area, and on the trigger assembly, hammer, and breech bolt. The right rear frame panel is marked “WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/OBERNDORF A NECKAR” and there is a “crown/
crown/U” proof on top of the rear of the breech bolt. It has the distinctive 50-500 meter graduated rear sight and ramp front sight with a fixed bead on top. Import marking on right of frame. The lower receiver extension has
a one-piece carbine length buttstock. The buttstock has a hard rubber buttplate with an intertwined “MW” in the center.
