LOT 1042
Excellent Marlin Model 1893 Lever Action Takedown Rifle - Serial no.
319112, 30-30 cal., 26 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock.
Manufactured in 1905, this is an exceptional example of a Marlin Model 1893 lever action rifle.
The Model 1893 was one of the most prolific models in the Marlin lineup, with as many as 1,000,000
estimated to have been produced before it was discontinued in 1935, and it carried on with a spiritual
successor much longer in the Model 336. Just like their biggest competitor, the Winchester Model 1894, the
Marlin Model 1893 was highly valued in the American West,
or anywhere else where rugged firepower was needed.
The rifles remained popular among ranchers, hunters, and lawmen well into
the 20th century, regularly seeing long working careers and hard use in unforgiving environments,
leaving relatively few in high condition available for collectors, particularly in the more standard “working
gun” configurations like this example. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line Marlin address and
patent dates, ending with 1893. The Special Smokeless Steel marking is on the upper left flat alongside the rear sight.
The “30-30” caliber marking is on top at the breech. The typical Marlin Safety marking is on top of the frame and the
serial number is on the bottom, while the model marking is on the upper tang. It is fitted with a set of “Rocky Mountain” type
sights including a German silver blade front sight, an elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight, and the upper tang is drilled and tapped for a
peep sight on either side of the model marking. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 90% of the slightly thinning original blue finish and 90% plus of the vibrant original case colors with a few patches having thinned
to show a grey patina, some scattered light scratches, and a few small patches of brown freckling. The wood is exceptionally fine with some scattered light dings and scratches on the left side
of the buttstock. Mechanically excellent. An exceptional example of the Marlin Model 1893!
Estimate: 6,500 - 11,000
LOT 1041
Desirable Early Production Special Order Bullard Large Frame Lever Action
Sporting Rifle in .40-90 Bullard - Serial no. 370, 40-90 cal., 28 inch octagon bbl., blue/
casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured c. 1886 to
1890, this is a very fine example of one of an estimated 10,000
to 12,000 lever actions manufactured by the Bullard Repeating
Arms Company, with less being of this particular Large Frame
variety. These rifles were patented in 1881 and were often
referred to in company literature as the Model 1886. Much like their competitors from Winchester, these
Bullard lever guns were offered in a wide array of configurations including both large and small frames,
as well as military muskets. There were also a wide array of special order options available including multiple
stock configurations and grades, calibers, and sights. Also like their competitors, these Bullards often saw hard use
as working guns, with many finding their way to the western frontier, leaving very few surviving examples in high
condition like this one. This particular example, chambered in the venerable .40-90 Bullard, would have been more than capable of downing even the largest
game the frontier had to offer. Additionally, the rack-and-pinion design of the Bullard action made it not only one of the quietest, but also one of the smoothest
operating actions available on the market during the period. This particular rifle has survived in as a high condition example of a special order sporting rifle with its half magazine and shotgun
buttplate. The upper left of the action is marked with the two-line Bullard address and patent date and the caliber marking is on top of the breech. The serial number is marked on top at the rear of
the action, just behind the hammer. It is fitted with a tall brass blade front sight and graduated folding ladder rear sight, while the upper tang is drilled and tapped for a peep sight (not included). It is
mounted with a smooth forearm and finely figured, straight grip stock with a checkered, hard rubber, shotgun buttplate with the Bullard markings and logo at the center.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 70% plus of the slightly thinned original blue finish, the balance a smooth brown or bright grey patina, and 40% of the original case colors remain on the action. The wood is very
fine with some scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A desirable, early production, special order Bullard Large Frame rifle!
