Rare Documented Special Order
Winchester Nickel Trimmed Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle
in .22 Short with Factory Letter - Serial no. 314244, 22 short cal.,
24 inch octagon bbl., blue/nickel finish, highly figured walnut stock. Manufactured in 1907 with
special order two-tone finish (blue/nickel). The accompanying factory letter lists the rifle in .22 short caliber and two-tone finish
(“nickel trimmings”) when it was received in the warehouse on May 4, 1907 and shipped on May 6. The barrel is blue, and the
remaining surfaces are plated in nickel. According to Winchester slide action rifle expert and author Ned Schwing, only 1,340 Model
1890s received the factory half nickel finish within the serial number range 1-329,999 (see “Winchester Slide Action Rifles, Vol I,” page 221).
The top barrel flat has the two-line address/patent dates marking followed by “-MOD. 1890-” ahead of the rear sight and “22 SHORT” at the
breech. The upper tang is marked “WINCHESTER/TRADE MARK.” Matching serial numbers are on the frame and lower tang. Fitted with dovetailed
blade front and elevation adjustable rear sights.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel retains 30% original
blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina.
The remaining metal surfaces retain 70% original nickel
plating mixed with flaking. The wood is fine showing
some minor-moderate pressure dents and scratches.
Mechanically excellent.

Excellent Antique Winchester Model 1890 Slide Action Rifle with Desirable
Casehardened Receiver and Factory Letter - Serial no. 56447, 22 L cal., 24 3/8 inch octagon
bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1898, the accompanying
factory letter lists the rifle in “L” (.22 Long) caliber when received in the warehouse on March 1,
1898, and shipped on March 15, 1898. Beaded blade front and elevation
adjustable rear notch sights, first style barrel inscription,
Winchester “WP” proofs correctly absent, “22 LONG” caliber
marking on top barrel flat at the breech, casehardened
Second Model receiver with hidden locking lugs, and three-
line maker, model, and patent marking on the upper tang.
12 groove slide handle and plain, straight grip walnut stock
with casehardened steel crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent with 90% plus original blue finish with well defined markings, some small dings.
The receiver retains 90% original vivid case colors with some traces of light oxidation and small surface scratches. The
wood is very fine with scattered small dings, small chip visible at the toe, and some dark spotting and 80% of the original
case colors on the buttplate. Mechanically excellent
