LOT 3229
Alvin A. White Signed Master Engraved Colt Second Generation Single Action Army
Revolver with Herb Glass Sr. Letter - Serial no. 36864SA, 45 Long Colt cal., 5 1/2 inch
round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, hardwood grips. Manufactured in 1962. This revolver
was wonderfully engraved by Master Engraver Alvin A. White, with his hand inscribed initials
“A.A.W.” signed on the right of the front grip strap. This revolver is serial numbered 36864SA.
A pair of guns consecutively numbered 36862SA and 36863SA were also engraved by Alvin
White, and were reportedly prepared as samples of his work when he and Herb Glass were
seeking to get engraving business from Colt. Those revolvers are also offered out of the same
collection in the previous lot. That pair of White engraved revolvers have an included letter
addressed from Herb Glass, dated March 10, 1967, in which Mr. Glass states, “At that time,
we prepared about a dozen samples for submission to the company. After we acquired their
business, these samples reverted to me.” Master Engraver Alvin White’s engraving covers 75%
of the surfaces of this revolver, displaying floral scroll engraving on a punch-dot background
on the barrel, ejector housing, frame, hammer, loading gate, trigger guard and grip straps.
The revolver wears a set of hardwood grips with inlaid Rampant Colt medallions at the tops.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retains 99% plus original blue finish and case colors with
crisp engraving, minimal handling evidence, and attractive grain in the grips. Mechanically
excellent. This fine piece of art exemplifies that not all art is framed and would be a welcome
addition in any Single Action Army collection!
Provenance: The Brig & Louise Pemberton Collection.
Estimate: 5,500 - 8,500
