Outstanding Factory Presentation Inscribed Pre-War/Post-War Colt Single
Action Army Revolver with Ivory Grips and Factory Letter - Serial no.
357725, 38 Special cal., 5 1/2 inch
round bbl., blue/casehardened
finish, ivory grips. Originally manufactured
in 1940, this is an outstanding example of what has become known as a
“pre-war/post-war” Colt Single Action Army revolver, with the parts having been
manufactured prior to World War II and then assembled and shipped after the war. This particular example has a very
unique factory inscription. In “Colt’s Single Action Army Revolver Pre-War Post-War Model” by Don Wilkerson, he notes that 338 total
of these “pre-war/post-war” Single Action Army revolvers were produced. The factory letter lists the revolver in .38 caliber with a 5
1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, grips not listed, and the special notation “To be used as an award at the
Hartford Antique Gun Show held October 4-5, 1969.” It is listed as charged to the Advertising Department
of Colt’s Firearms - Dept. 701 and shipped on 3 October 1969. The letter has the additional comment at the bottom that the
revolver was won by Charles Patterson from Laurel Mountain Ski Resort, Ligonier, Pennsylvania, and
was subsequently shipped to him on 20 November 1969. The back strap is inscribed “PRESENTED
TO CHARLES PATTERSON/1st ANNUAL C.C.G.C.A.A. SHOW”. It is not entirely clear what the
acronym stands for, but it is likely “Central Connecticut Gun Collectors Antique Arms”. The butt is
inscribed “HARTFORD, CONN./OCTOBER 1969”. The top of the barrel has the single line address
while the left has the model and caliber marking. The left of the frame has the two-line patent dates followed by
the Rampant Colt, and there is a Colt “VP” proof on the left of the trigger guard. It is fitted with standard blade front
and frame-top groove rear sights, as well as a pair of very attractive, smooth ivory grips.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retains 99% of the blue and casehardened finishes with a minor scratch on
the ejector rod housing, very fine cylinder turn line, and otherwise only the slightest handling marks overall.
Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Charles Marx Collection.
Estimate: 5,500 - 10,000
