World War II Production U.S. Springfield Armory M1C Garand Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle with CMP
Certificate of Authenticity and Matching Numbered Bracket - Serial no. 3346779, 30-06 Springfield cal., 24 inch round bbl.,
parkerized finish, walnut stock. Receiver manufactured in January 1945 and subsequently upgraded to M1C sniper configuration by Griffin & Howe as a part of the World
War II contract between the civilian firm and the U.S. Springfield Armory. Adopted in July 1944, the M1C Garand rifle was the first U.S. standard issued semi-automatic sniper
rifle, with an initial order total of 21,158 placed, though only 7,971 M1C rifles were completed by the end of World War II. Various manufacturing and accuracy issues, along
with a shortage of telescopes, delayed delivery of the first rifles until the closing day of the Pacific Theater Campaign in mid 1945, with the M1C replacing the M1903A4 as
the official U.S. sniper rifle from the end of World War II, through the Korean War, and into the Vietnam War. The M1C was superseded by the later M1D variant, developed in
late 1944 by John C. Garand as an improvement over the former with 21,380 manufactured c. 1951-1953, making the M1C the more scarce of the two M1 Garand sniper rifle
versions, especially with the destruction of several hundred receivers by U.S. Ordnance in the 1980 and 1990s. Reference pages 421 to 434 and 519 to 527 of Bruce Canfield’s
“The M1 Garand Rifle” for more details on the M1C sniper rifle and its developments. Features a winged blade front sight and un-staked type 3 “lock-bar” adjustable peep rear
sight assembly, unmarked Springfield Armory pattern wide-base gas cylinder with a punch mark on the bayonet lug, chamfered cylinder lock, “P/o” marked cross-slot lock
screw, stamped lower band with rolled retaining pin, “S A 12 44” barrel with bright chamber ring, “D28287-12SA/O-11B” bolt, un-cut “D35382 9 SA” flat-side operating rod, and a
“D28290-14-SA” trigger housing with a “C 46008-7 SA” hammer, “SA-11” safety, and stamped trigger guard. Mated with a Griffin & Howe M1C mounting bracket on the left side
of the receiver with correctly staked screws and a matching serial number “3346779” stamped on the underside of the bracket with the distinctive Griffin & Howe flat-topped “3”
stamps. Fitted with a set of walnut handguards and a walnut stock, marked with a boxed “S.A./G.A.W.” (U.S. Springfield Armory, Col. George A. Woody) inspector cartouche and “ordnance wheel”
acceptance stamp on the left of the wrist, circled serif “P” firing proof on the grip, a small “ordnance wheel” acceptance stamp under the grip, and a correct World War II era Kay Leather Products
Inc. “K LINE” leather cheek riser/rest laced onto the butt. Includes a matching numbered Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) certificate of authenticity dated March 27, 2012, a green CMP
hard case, shipping sleeve, a flat-buckle M1 web sling, and a “SA” marked M2 flash hider attachment.
CONDITION: Fine, retaining 80% plus original parkerized finish with some mild edge wear, light cycling wear, plum/brown coloration visible on the receiver, brown patina on the upper and
lower bands, a few minor specs of spotting, and some light handling marks. The front handguard is fine as sanded and re-oiled, with the rear handguard and stock being very fine with some
scattered light handling marks and clear stamps. Mechanically excellent.

LOT 3406
World War II U.S. Remington Model 1903A4 Sniper Rifle with M82 Scope - Serial no. 3420475, 30-06 Springfield cal., 24 inch
round bbl., parkerized/blue finish, walnut stock. This Model 1903A4 sniper rifle was manufactured by the Remington Arms Co., in 1943. The rifle has a
blue M82 Telescopic Sight with tapered post reticle and sliding sunshade. The left side of the scope body is roll-stamped with “TELESCOPE M82” above the serial number
and the stock number; the markings are partially obscured by the scope rings. The telescopic sight has the original blue finish with parkerized rings and a standard parkerized
Redfield mount with casehardened coarse adjustment screws. The rifle has the distinctive Model 1903A4 features which include Type “C” scant grip stock with bolt relief cut-out, modified bolt handle,
rear sight removed to accommodate the scope mount, and a barrel with no front sight base or blade. The rifle is original and has not been Ordnance overhauled. The bolt, barrel bands, sling, stacking swivels, magazine cut-off, and
trigger retain the original blue finish. The buttplate, receiver, and telescopic sight base have the original gray-green parkerized finish. The receiver markings “U.S./REMINGTON/MODEL 03-A3” are marked on the left side to allow them
to be viewed with the scope mount in place. The serial number is located on the right side of the receiver below the scope mount. The barrel is roll-stamped “RA” above the Ordnance “shell and flame” insignia and the date “7-43”.
The bolt body, cocking piece, cut-off, and most of the other rifle components are stamped with the Remington “R”. There are five Remington inspection marks stamped on the underside of the stock in front of the trigger guard
and the “W” stock-maker’s mark is stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. The left side of the stock below the receiver is stamped “RA” followed by the Ordnance escutcheon and the
Ordnance final inspection mark “FJA” in a rectangle. A circled “P” proof mark is stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. The M1903A4 Sniper rifles were initially fitted with Weaver M73
Telescopic Sights. Rifles that remained in service following World War II frequently were upgraded and fitted with the superior M81 or M82 telescopic sights.
CONDITION: Very fine. The rifle shows light-moderate handling wear and retains 90% of the original blue and parkerized finishes. The reoiled stock is fine overall with scattered minor
scratches and handling marks. The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. All of the Ordnance and Remington markings on the stock are visible. The M82 Telescopic Sight has 90% of
the blue finish. Mechanically excellent. The optics are excellent. Most of the U.S. Remington M1903A4 rifles were arsenal overhauled following World War II. Model 1903A4 rifles with
original finish and components and no Ordnance rebuild marks are scarce. This is a very fine example of a Remington Model 1903A4 Sniper rifle in very fine condition with upgraded
M82 Telescopic Sight.
Estimate: 4,500 - 6,500
