Exceptional Factory Engraved Merwin, Hulbert &
Co. Army Single Action Revolver with Raised Relief
Carved Mexican Eagle Grip - Serial no. 17696, 44 MH&Co
cal., 7 inch round bbl., nickel finish, antique ivory grips.
The Merwin, Hulbert & Co. “Larger Frame” revolvers were
manufactured 1876-1880s by Hopkins & Allen. This example
has the distinctive factory floral engraving and includes a stag on
the left side of the frame. The barrel has the standard markings, and
the frame has the “CALIBRE 44 M.H. & Co” marking. Matching “8211” assembly numbers are
on the barrel, cylinder, and frame, and the butt has the serial number and lanyard ring. The
right grip is carved with an eagle, rattlesnake, and cactus design based on the Coat of Arms
of Mexico.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine with 95% plus untouched original nickel plating on the barrel and
frame, 60% plus original nickel on the cylinder, crisp engraving, strong original case colors, smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, and generally minor overall wear. The slightly undersized grips are also very fine and have attractive natural tones and grain, minor age cracks, and distinct carving. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 8,500 - 13,000

Factory Panel Scene Engraved Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Pocket
Army Single Action Revolver -
Serial no. 5802, 44-40 WCF cal., 3 3/8 inch round bbl., nickel finish, walnut grips. These
classic revolvers were manufactured circa 1876 into the 1880s by the Hopkins & Allen Mfg. Co. This exceptional factory engraved
revolver has the classic floral engraving associated with the factory along with a round reposed stag panel scene on the left side plate. It features a round barrel, fluted cylinder, and bird’s head butt. The left side of the frame under the cylinder is marked “CALIBRE/WINCHESTER” followed by “1873,” and the right side of the frame is marked
“MERWIN, HULBERT & CO. N.Y./POCKET ARMY”. The left side of the barrel has the two-line Hopkins & Allen address and patent date marking. The serial number is stamped on the right of the grip frame ahead of the lanyard hole.
The left of the grip frame, rear face of the cylinder, back of the barrel lug, and the cylinder pin have the assembly number “7702”. It is fitted with a pair of smooth period fitted replacement walnut grips.
CONDITION: Very fine with crisp engraving, 75% plus original nickel plating, some flaking on the cylinder, strong original niter blue finish on the hammer, flashes of original case colors on the hammer, smooth gray and brown patina
on the balance, some spots of isolated pitting, and minor overall wear. The grips are also very fine and have minor handling
and storage marks. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive example of Merwin, Hulbert & Co.’s classic “Pocket Army” revolver. Many of these revolvers were used out West making high condition factory engraved examples particularly desirable.
