The wrist escutcheon is inscribed “H/47.” The stock has “6-A” in red paint on the right, a crude cross carved on the left, and Ordnance marks that appear to include “WI” on the bottom. Includes a socket bayonet marked “9” and “N” near the base of the blade and a steel ramrod with button head tip. Thomas Gill was an Ordnance contractor in the last two decades of the 18th century. CONDITION: Very good with dark mottled gray and brown patina, moderate pitting, oil staining, a glued repair on the jaw spur, aged patina on the brass furniture, and moderate overall wear. The refinished stock is good and has mild overall wear, some chips, repairs, and mild dings and dents. Mechanically fine. The bayonet is fair with dark patina, mild pitting, edge wear, and a crack in the collar. Estimate: 4,500 - 7,000
LOT 273 Scarce British Flintlock Light Infantry Fusil - NSN, 65 cal., 37 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Light infantry fusils were lighter weight, carbine bore muskets developed during the French & Indian War (Seven Years War) and issued mainly to specialized light infantry units designed to be more agile then the regular infantry. The smoothbore barrel has a block front sight/ bayonet lug and Ordnance proofs at the breech. The lock has the Georgian cipher at the center, “TOWER” at the tail, and light border engraving. The furniture is brass and similar to the full-sized “Brown Bess” muskets of the era. The stock has the swell at the ramrod entry pipe, a raised plateau around the barrel tang, the rail style comb, and Ordnance marks including a “1780” or “1786” dated storekeeper mark on the right side of the butt. CONDITION: Very good with mottled gray and brown patina, mild pitting, aged patina on the brass furniture, and general mild overall wear. The refinished stock has some repairs around the lock and mild dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
LOT 274 Very Rare Liege Proofed Child’s Model 1777 Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 36 cal., 22 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This small musket measures under 33 inches but is a functional musket. The smoothbore barrel has a Liege proof on top at the breech. The barrel band has a blade front sight. The small lock has a brass pan and is functional and aligns with the vent on the barrel. The furniture is iron. The stock has the distinctive inset cheekpiece. The wrist escutcheon has the letter “M,” and “171” is in white on the left side of the wrist. Includes a small socket bayonet. The consignor noted it as a “Kindergewehr” formerly in the famous Henk L. Visser Collection. CONDITION: Fine with mostly gray patina, some light pitting, and generally only minor overall wear. The stock is also fine and has some minor flakes at the edges, a few tiny cracks, and minor overall scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Henk L. Revolutionary War Era British Short Land Pattern “Brown Bess” Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 75 cal., 41 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This c. 1780s “Short Land, New Pattern” musket has a smoothbore barrel with a bayonet stud/front sight, Ordnance proofs, and a faint regimental marking. The lock has “TOWER/GILL” at the tail and the Georgian cipher at the center. The musket has the flat side plate and buttplate of the Short Land, New Pattern muskets and the second type second ramrod ferrule without the collar. Sling swivels are fitted to the forend and front
