Exceptional Civil War Era Tower Pattern 1853 Enfield Percussion Rifle-Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 577 cal., 39 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. The lock is marked “1863/TOWER” at the center and St. Edward’s Crown without the “VR” below at the rear indicating this was a commercial arm, not one accepted by the British government. Many British companies exported rifles for use by both the Confederacy and the Union during the American Civil War. In fact, the Pattern 1853 “Enfield” is said to be the second most widely used rifle of the war. Solid front sight that doubles as a bayonet lug, and 900 yard ladder rear sight. The barrel has the standard double 25 bore size marks indicating .577 caliber. Small letters “ET” deeply stamped in the stock behind the lower tang. Includes a period socket bayonet. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 85% plus original blue finish with smooth brown patina on the balance mostly concentrated on the barrel bands, 70% muted case colors visible on the lock, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Brass exhibits a pleasing golden aged patina. Stock is also very fine with some scattered light dings and handling marks, a noticeable chipped/absent section on the lower front edge of the left flat (some chipped pieces included in a bag), and distinct edges overall. Mechanically excellent. Bayonet is fine. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
LOT 282 British G.H. Daw Percussion Volunteer Rifle - Serial no. 480, 577 cal., 33 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This rifle is similar to the Pattern 1856 rifles used by the British military at the time but is more finely finished. It has a fixed notch front and 1,100 yard folding ladder rear sight with “P.W & S” marked on the right of the base, bayonet lug on the right marked “480”, “GEORGE. H. DAW, 57, THREADNEEDLE ST, LONDON” marked on top of the barrel, double “25” bore size marks indicating .577 caliber and Birmingham proofs at the left of the breech, “G.H.DAW.” marked lock, sling swivels on the upper barrel band and lower tang, circular silver plate inscribed with initials on top of the wrist, “3226” stamped on the underside of the buttstock, checkered forend section, and checkered stock wrist. Includes a London Armoury marked brass muzzle cap. CONDITION: Fine, retains 75% original blue finish with smooth brown patina on the balance, 60% original case colors on the lock with some patches of moderate surface corrosion on the hammer and buttplate, patterns of case colors visible on the trigger guard with scattered light freckling, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Stock is very fine with crisp checkering, a few cracks around the buttplate, some light scratches, and defined edges overall. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500

British Wilkinson Percussion Brunswick Volunteer Rifle with Bayonet - Serial no. 671, 577 cal., 30 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This Wilkinson made volunteer rifle has an outward appearance resembling the British military Brunswick pattern rifles, but is chambered in the updated .577 caliber; the standard British military service round in the latter part of the 1850s. It has a fixed notch front and folding leaf rear sight, bayonet bar on the right, “WILKINSON” marked on top of the barrel, “LONDON” marked lock, sling swivels mounted on the forend and underneath buttstock, volunteer rifle nomenclature “C/11/VC” marked in three lines on top of the brass buttplate and serial number “671” marked on the rear of the buttplate. Includes a Pattern 1848 Brunswick brass handled bayonet with the unit marking “96 E 20” on the hilt. CONDITION: Very good with scattered light pin-prick pitting on the iron surfaces and otherwise sharp markings on the barrel and lock. Brass exhibits a bright patina. Stock is also very good with numerous scattered dents and scratches, and mostly defined edges. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is fine. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500

Civil War Era London Armoury Co. Pattern 1853 Percussion Rifle- Musket Dated 1862 with Bayonet - NSN, 577 cal., 39 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Queen Victoria’s “Crown/V.R.” cipher marked at the tail of the lock and “1862/L.A. Co.” ahead of the hammer, London crown proofs and “25” bore markings on the left of the breech indicating .577 caliber, small “L.A.C” markings on various components, an oval script cartouche stamped on the left stock flat, and the right of the buttstock is stamped with a double roundel marked “LONDON ARMOURY BERMONDSEY” in the outer circle and dated “1862” in the center. Initials “WK” carved upside down in the lower right of the buttstock. Includes a period socket bayonet. CONDITION: Very good with mostly smooth brown patina overall and otherwise sharp markings and edges in the metal. Brass exhibits an attractive age darkened patina. Stock is fine as re-oiled, with numerous scattered dents and scratches, carving as mentioned above, and mostly clear stampings. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is good with some scattered
patches of light to moderate pitting. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000
