LOT 1334 Fine W.W. Mason Volunteer Type Flintlock Musket - NSN, 75 cal., 39 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut
stock. The smoothbore barrel has a bayonet lug on top that doubles as the front sight and a pair of Ordnance private proofs on the left at the breech. The lock has “WW/Mason” signed at the center. The furniture is brass. The trigger guard has
an acorn finial, and the buttplate has “89” on the tang. The stock is lighter in construction than the full-sized Brown Bess military muskets of the era. Thousands of muskets were manufactured in the early 19th century for the British volunteers who formed units to protect the United Kingdom in the event of a French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. CONDITION: Fine with mostly silver-gray patina on the lock and barrel with some light speckled oxidation, attractive aged patina on the brass, and generally minor age and storage related wear overall. The stock is also fine and has numerous mild scratches and dings, a few dents, and glossy varnish. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
LOT 1335 Mather, Newcastle British Elliot’s Pattern Volunteer Flintlock Carbine - NSN, 65 cal., 28 1/4 inch round
bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This carbine was manufactured during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic
Wars when various volunteer units were formed across the United Kingdom. It is marked “MATHER/NEWCASTLE” on the lock and has Tower private proofs on the smoothbore barrel. It has a bayonet stud/front sight block, saddle ring and bar on the left, and brass furniture. CONDITION: Fine with mottled gray and brown patina, minor pitting, aged patina on the furniture, and generally minor overall wear. The stock is also fine and has a coat of varnish, minor dings and scratches, and a few minor flakes. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000
LOT 1336 Arden 1748 Dated British Long Land Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket - NSN, 75 cal., 45 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The Long Land Pattern “Brown Bess” muskets were the primary infantry arms of the British Empire through most of the 18th century, including in the French & Indian War and American Revolution in North America. Some of these muskets were used by the American Patriots as well during the fight for independence and beyond. The smoothbore barrel has a bayonet stud that also serves as the front sight. The “banana” shaped lock has the Georgian cipher at the center, lined borders, and “ARDEN/1748” at the tail. A William Arden is listed as a gunsmith at Sugar Loaf Court, Goodman’s Yard, Minories, in 1762. The buttplate is marked “44/96.” Ramrod absent. CONDITION: Fair as shortened and reconverted to flintlock configuration with dark brown patina and moderate oxidation and heavy pitting on the lock and barrel, aged patina on the brass, and moderate overall wear. The refinished and likely replacement stock is good and has moderate dings and scratches, a repaired crack above the nose of the lock, and mild overall wear. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000
LOT 1337 British Brown Bess Flintlock Musket - NSN, 75 cal., 42 inch round bbl., brown finish, walnut stock. This c. 1750s-1760s musket has the Georgian cipher at the center of the lock and “GALTON” on the tail. The smoothbore barrel has a block front sight/bayonet lug, Ordnance proofs, and another unclear marking on the left at the breech. The furniture is brass. The sideplate is flush fitting rather than the rounded version. CONDITION: Fair as shortened, reconverted to flintlock configuration, and refinished with mostly a coat of brown finish along with dark brown patina, mild oxidation and pitting, bayonet lug moved back, aged patina on the brass, and general moderate overall wear. The stock is also good and has some work done around the lock mortise and edges, a few thin cracks, general mild scratches and dings, and moderate overall wear. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000
