Cased Pair of Silver Mounted, Engraved, and Gold Banded Field & Parker Flintlock Officers/Dueling Pistols -A) Field & Parker Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 52 cal., 10 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/blue/silver finish, walnut stock. Field & Parker were gunmakers and goldsmiths at 233 Holborn in London and became Parker Field & Sons. These pistols date to around the 1792-1794. The smoothbore barrels are swamped, have dovetailed blade front sights, gold inlaid band and vent liners, marked with “Field & Parker Holborn” in script on top, and are not proofed. The upper tangs have integral notch rear sights and floral engraving on tang. The locks have “Field & Parker” in script and light martial themed engraving. The triggers are plain. The iron trigger guards have floral and martial engraving. The silver wrist escutcheons are engraved with a crest that appears to be a palm tree with a saw around over a torse. The silver tendril pommel caps have star and floral engraving and satyr mask plugs. The case has a Riviere trade label, a brush, Bartram & Co. powder flask, a few lead balls, ball mold, and rod. CONDITION: Very good with gray patina and light pitting on the iron components, bright gold, natural aged patina on the silver, distinct markings and engraving, and mild overall wear. The restored stock is good and has repairs visible, mainly on the forend, mild scrapes and dings, and a smooth coat of recent varnish. Mechanically fine. The relined case is fine and has moderate overall wear including a crack in the lid. The accessories are mostly fine or better and have age related wear. B) Field & Parker Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 52 cal., 10 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/blue/silver finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Very good with mostly gray patina and mild oxidation/pitting on the iron components, bright gold, light aged patina on the silver, distinct markings and engraving patterns, and general mild wear. The refinished stock is also very good and has most of the glossy finish, a minor crack at the lock screw, general light scratches and dings, and a few dents. Mechanically fine. Cased Pair of Engraved British Flintlock Dueling Pistols Signed Twigg -A) British Dueling Pistol - NSN, 20 bore cal., 9 inch octagon bbl., brown/ casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. John Fox Twigg (1732-1790) was one of the greatest late 18th century English gunmakers and was is considered to be the “father” of the proper English dueling pistols. He formed a partnership with his nephew John Bass (1761-1794) in 1788. John Manton, Twigg’s former foreman, purchased the business in 1795. The smoothbore barrels have silver blade front sights, “LONDON” stamped on top, deeply struck ordnance private proofs on the upper left flats, and “ITH” instead of Twigg’s “IT” maker’s mark on the underside of the barrels along with “STUBBS.” The standing breeches have integral notch rear sights and burst engraving. The locks have semi-rainproof pans with slight gutter, frizzen spring rollers, sliding half-cock safeties, stepped tails with burst pattern engraving, and “Twigg” signatures that are somewhat plainer than usual for Twigg. The single set triggers have adjustment screws at the front. The trigger guards have pineapple finials and floral engraving. The pineapple finials came into fashion in the mid-1780s. The stocks have checkered wrists with silver escutcheons. The relined case has a cleaning rod. CONDITION: Good with mottled gray and brown patina, mild pitting, a replacement cock, some case colors and niter blue on the lock, dark aged patina on the silver, and moderate overall wear. The stock is good and has some glued cracks in the forend, crisp checkering, a tension crack on the left at the screw, and light scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. The case is good with mild age and storage related wear including cracks in the lid and some compression marks and fading on the relined interior which has some loose dividers. B) British Dueling Pistol - NSN, 20 bore cal., 9 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Good with mottled gray and brown patina and mild pitting, reworked lock with 50% of the refinished case colors, aged patina on the silver, and moderate overall wear. The stock is also good and has cracks in the forend and left flat, crisp checkering, and mild scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The Collection of Joe M. Wanenmacher Jr.
