Cased Pair of S. Brunn Flintlock Dueling/Gentleman’s Pistols -A) S. Brunn Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 66 cal., 9 1/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/ casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. The lock marking and address on the barrels indicates this pair was manufactured around 1798-1804 by Samuel Brunn who was also gunmaker to the George IV from 1800 to 1820 as the Prince of Wales and Prince Regent and the Board of Ordnance. This pair with its fixed sights, large caliber, and smooth bores would have been suitable for use in a duel and could have also served a gentleman in other affairs such as self-defense while traveling. The browned smoothbore barrels have silver blade front sights, “No. 55 CHARRING CROSS LONDON” on top, and Tower private proofs on the upper left flats. The casehardened locks have “-S. BRUNN-” at center and sliding safeties and light engraving at the tail. The blued iron furniture has some floral engraving. The full-length walnut stocks have checkered wrists and blank silver escutcheons. The case has a reproduction label on the lid interior, cleaning rod, patches, three-way combination flask, oiler, ball mold, and a few lead balls. CONDITION: Very good, dark aged patina on the silver, mostly smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, some mild oxidation/pitting, generally distinct markings, and minor marks and scratches. The trigger guard is refinished with most remaining. The stock is fine and has some minor hairline cracks, crisp checkering, and light scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. The relined and refinished case and the accessories are very good and have general mild wear, repaired cracks in the lid, and filled key hole escutcheon mortise. B) S. Brunn Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 66 cal., 9 1/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/ casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Very good, traces of case colors on the lock, dark aged patina on the silver, mostly smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, some light oxidation/pitting, mostly distinct markings, and some general mild wear. The triggerguard is also refinished, similar to the other pistol in set. The stock is fine and has some minor cracks, crisp checkering, and the typical dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Cased Pair of Gold Banded and Engraved Simmons Flintlock Pistols -A) Simmons Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 53 cal., 5 7/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/ casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. These c. 1820 flintlock pistols have smoothbore, Damascus barrels with fixed silver blade front sights, “LONDON” inscribed on the top flats, Birmingham proofs on the bottom flats, gold bands at the breech ends, and platinum vent liners. The standing breeches include fixed notch rear sights and have burst and floral engraving. The locks have deep pans with a partially guttered “semi-rainproof” design, frizzen spring rollers, burst and floral engraving, “SIMMONS” inscribed at center towards the bottom, half-cock safeties, and stepped tails. The wedge and wrist escutcheons are silver ovals. The remaining furniture is blued steel with floral and martial pattern engraving, including a stylized pineapple type design on the trigger guard finials. The stocks have checkered bag shaped wrists. They come in a hardwood case with a cleaning rod, “30” marked ball mold, and powder flask. CONDITION: Fine with 50% original brown finish mixed with brown patina on the barrel along with some light twist patterns visible, bright gold band and platinum liner, traces of original case color patterns, otherwise mottled gray patina on the lock and standing breech, strong original blue on the ramrod pipe, bright polished trigger guard, distinct engraving, some mild oxidation, and general mild overall wear. The stock is also fine and has some crisp checkering, general light scratches and dings, some chipping and a thin crack at the forend tip, and fairly minor overall wear. Mechanically fine. The case and accessories are good with mild overall age and storage related wear. B) Simmons Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 53 cal., 5 7/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Very good with 40% original brown finish mixed with gray and brown patina on the barrel as well as light twist patterns, mottled gray patina on the lock and standing breech, nice aged patina on the silver, polished trigger guard with some patina forming, strong original blue on the ramrod pipe, light oxidation, and mild overall wear. The stock is fine and has crisp checkering, smooth finish, and general light scratches and dings. The rear of the safety is absent; otherwise, mechanically fine. Provenance: The Collection of Joe M.
