Documented North-West Mounted Police
Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Carbine
with Factory Letter - Serial no. 44320, 45-75 cal., 22
inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This is an example of a Winchester Third Model 1876 Northwest Mounted Police Carbine and was one of 455 identical
carbines purchased by and
shipped to the NWMP on that order in 1885 as recorded by Lewis E. Yearout in “Winchester North West Mounted Police Carbines.” The
accompanying factory letter (copy) confirms the carbine configuration as well as received in the warehouse on April 6, 1885 and shipped on April 8, 1885, order number 19819. The carbine
would have been part of a large order by the N.W.M.P. in preparation for the North-West Rebellion. The carbine features an integral stud front and NWMP Spanish metered carbine rear sights. The top
of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/King’s patent dates in front of the rear sight and “CAL/45-75” at the breech, the brass elevator is marked “45-75”, the upper tang is marked “MODEL. 1876.”,
and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. The third model receiver features an integral dust cover rail and a dust cover with rear
serrations. A stud with saddle ring is mounted on the left rear of the receiver. Mounted with a full forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. The right rear of the stock is stamped with the a faint “NWMP” cartouche.
CONDITION: Very good in above average condition for a Mountie carbine, displaying authentic “frontier issue” character while retaining 30% original blue finish in and around the sheltered areas with a smooth brown-gray patina on the balance. Traces of original nitre blue remain on the loading gate. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer. The re-oiled wood is shows similar character with a repaired forearm and minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Wayne Connor Collection.
