Exceptional Engraved and Silver Inlaid J.P. Sauer & Son Side by Side Box Lock Shotgun with Case - Serial no. 71086, 12 gauge, 28 3/8 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This stunning J.P. Sauer & Son Shotgun is from the collection of the late Jim Wilkinson of Prescott, Arizona. Wilkinson grew up spending his summers working
the family Granite Dells Ranch in Arizona and returning to his native Illinois for school in the fall. Wilkinson attended the University of Illinois and began his career in his family’s Central Illinois lumberyards. In 1946 he permanently moved to Arizona to work his own ranch in Granite Dells and establish the Rifle Ranch, a gun store specializing in custom rifles, handloading, and shooting supplies. Wilkinson was an avid hunter with expeditions to Canada and Alaska as well as more exciting destinations like Africa, Afghanistan, India, and Nepal, all in the pursuit of mountain sheep. Wilkinson would become the 10th person in the world to achieve the “Super Slam” which is a collection of 16 different types of wild sheep found on four separate continents. Wilkinson passed away in 2001. Blue steel dovetail lump barrels with 2 3/4 inch chambers, automatic ejectors, dual bead sights on the matte rib, standard German proofs and “9 54” proof date on the flats, and full/full chokes. Blued box lock action with side clips, rib extension third fastener, cocking indicators, single trigger with selector, and automatic sliding tang safety. This highly attractive shotgun is lavishly embellished starting at the breech end of the barrels with 3 1/4 inch wedges of fine scroll engraving and continuing onto the action which features, sharp, broad leaf scroll on punch dot texture backgrounds with highly detailed silver inlaid game scenes of mallard ducks on the right, a setter flushing grouse on the left, and a capercaillie on the underside. The trigger guard and tangs are engraved with matching leafy scroll and silver inlaid borders are visible throughout. The engraving is attributed to the shop of Kurt Jaeger. Attractively figured European walnut beavertail forearm and pistol grip stock with engraved blue steel grip cap, engraved forearm fittings, horn forearm tip and inset horn diamonds at the wrist, masterfully executed floral carved flats, silver initial oval inscribed “GGH” and serrated Sauer recoil pad. Includes leather bound takedown case. Stock measurements are: drop at comb 1 5/8 inches; drop at heel 2 3/4 inches; length of pull 14 inches. CONDITION: Excellent overall with 99% plus original blue finish, crisp, detailed engraving, dark natural patina on most of the silver inlays, some small dings on the wood, and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Case is very good with some visible exterior scuffs and scratches. Estimate: 5,000 - 8,000
Factory Engraved J. P. Sauer & Sohn 20 Gauge Royal Boxlock Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. 249204, 20 gauge, 26 inch solid rib bbl., blue/ casehardened finish, walnut stock. Blued Bochumer Verein steel barrels with a single brass bead sight on the matted solid rib, light engraving around either breech, 1962 dated German proofs, 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors, and chokes marked half(modified)/full. The casehardened sideclipped scalloped boxlock action displays light scroll engraving and features double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety switch. Nicely figured, multi-point skip-line checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings and pistol grip stock with shadowline cheekpiece and black polymer grip cap and buttplate. Includes a leather sling. Stock measurements: 1 11/16 inch drop at comb; 2 5/8 inch drop at heel; 14 3/8 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 3 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 99% original blue finish, 20% muted original case colors with the balance an attractive silver, and light handling evidence. The wood is also very
fine with some minor chipping around the edges, a few light scratches, and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 4,500
LOT 3503 Von Lengerke & Detmold Retailer Marked Factory Engraved and Gold Inlaid A. Francotte Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. 36613, 12 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., blue/coin finish, walnut stock. Dual bead sights on the matted concave solid rib, barrels marked “VON LENGERKE & DETMOLD” and “U. S. AGENTS.NEW.YORK” on the right and left respectively, 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors, and added interchangeable chokes. The coin finished action shows carved fences and floral scroll surrounding five pigeons on the right, four pheasants on the left, and four woodcocks on the underside with a gold federal eagle, and three mallards on the triggerguard. The gun features double triggers and an automatic tang safety. Nicely figured, multi-point checkered wide beavertail forend and pistol grip stock with leather faced recoil pad. Stock measurements: 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/2 inch drop at heel; 14 1/4 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 9 oz. CONDITION: Fine, showing 98% reapplied blue finish and 98% original coin finish, oil staining at the seams on the action, plum coloration at the front of the left barrel, light handling evidence, and crisp checkering on the replacement wood with some areas of varnish loss. Mechanically excellent.
