revolver is otherwise devoid of markings. It is fitted with a smooth walnut grip.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 75% plus of the original blue finish, strong patterns of the original case colors, and 30% of the original silver, with the balance
having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina or attractively aged brass. The grip is very fine with some scattered light dings and retaining most of the varnish. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The George S. Lewis Jr. Collection.

Phenomenal Experimental Colt Pocket Navy 4 1/2 Inch Octagon Barrel Cartridge Conversion Revolver - NSN, 38 RF cal., 4 1/2 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened/silver finish, walnut grips. Originally
manufactured as a percussion “Pocket Model of Navy Caliber” revolver, this example is an experimental, serialized predecessor to the approximately 2000 type four conversions: 4 1/2 inch octagon barrel .38 rimfire configuration c. 1873-1875. These
revolvers had no ejector attached to the barrel and had their loading lever cutouts filled. Interestingly, this revolver has no visible serial numbers and was likely maintained by the factory as the sample or model gun for the conversions. The top barrel

Navy Revolver - Serial no. 5321, 38 RF cal., 3 1/2 inch
round bbl., blue/casehardened/silver finish, walnut grips. Known
as the “type 5” conversion, this pistol is one of 10,000 revolvers manufactured or
converted for 38 metallic cartridges between 1873 and 1880. 6,500 were made from Colt
Police/Pocket Navy Model revolver parts with the remaining originally manufactured as cartridge
guns. This one has “two patent July 1871/1872” frame markings and features, including matching visible numbers. There are British proofs visible on the barrel and cylinder.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 70% plus of the original blue finish, 80% of the vibrant original case colors, and
strong traces of the original silver with
the balance having thinned to mostly
a smooth grey patina or attractively aged
brass. The grip is also very fine with some scattered minor dings. Mechanically excellent.
