Exquisite Highly Embellished Exhibition Quality Presentation Cased Factory Gold Inlaid Gaulois No. 1 Palm Squeezer Pistol - Serial no. 10716, 8 mm cal., 2 1/4 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, pearl grips. “Manufrance” manufactured these distinctive “squeezer” pistols c. 1893-1912. These pistols were initially called the Mitrailleuse (from “Grapeshot”) from 1893 to approximately 1895 before being re-branded as the Le Gaulois (native people of France as in the Gauls). This Gaulois has the manufacturer mark on the rear of the frame at the top, “Cal.” and “8m/m” at the front, and the Manufrance logo along with “GAULOIS” on the barrel in gold inlay. The left side of the action has the three position selector switch with “S”, “F”, and “D” markings in gold inlay. The left side of the frame and the right sideplate have been extensively masterfully embellished with exhibition quality gold inlay that features delicate grape vines and flowers.
The flourishes of vine inlay continue on the top and bottom of the frame as well as at the muzzle. The trigger mechanism has a smooth “black” mother of pearl grip pad. The barrel has a bead front sight, and the dust cover and front of the frame are serrated. The interior of the frame, interior of the sideplate, and bottom of the barrel are all matching numbered. Includes a leatherette wrapped presentation case.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retains 85% of the original blue finish and 95% plus of the vibrant original case colors on the trigger plunger with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth brown patina, most noticeably on the left of the barrel. The grip pad is excellent with only the slightest handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The case is very fine overall with some mild wear.
