Antique Factory Engraved 20 Gauge Holland & Holland “The Royal” Sidelock Double Barrel Shotgun with Case - Serial no. 8534, 20 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1885 per the information listed on page 333 of Donald Dallas’“Holland & Holland: The Royal Gunmaker”. “The Royal” as a trade name was registered on May 28th, 1885, meaning that this gun is among the first Royal guns built by H&H. Damascus steel barrels with a single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked “HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET. LONDON.” along with “WINNERS OF ALL THE ‘FIELD’/RIFLE TRIALS. LONDON. 1883.”, correct period London nitro proofs, and chambers measured at 2 3/4 inches with a single extractor. The casehardened sidelock action displays attractive rose and scroll engraving with the Holland & Holland signature on both lockplates and “THE ROYAL/PATENT SAFETY/HAMMERLESS” marked on the underside of the receiver and patent information on the toplever. The gun features double triggers, gas check firing pins, and tang mounted automatic safety switch with gold inlaid “SAFE”. Attractively figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings including the Anson button release and straight grip stock with gold inscription oval and serrated hard rubber buttplate. Includes a period oak and leather takedown case with H&H trade label, cleaning tools, and loading tools. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .630/.630 inches; choke constriction .002/.023 inches; minimum wall thickness .028/.027 inches; 1 13/16 inch drop at comb; 3 1/2 inch drop at heel; 14 5/16inch length of pull; weight 5 lbs. 14 oz. CONDITION: Very fine, with traces of original browning and strong pattern remaining on the barrels, 40% original case colors with the balance a fine grey patina, a few scratches on the side of the right barrel about midway down, and overall mild handling evidence. The wood is very good with numerous dings and scratches, a few pressure marks in the forend, and overall crisp checkering. The case is poor with lid partially detached. Accessories are good. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 5,000 - 8,000

Cased Pair of Factory Engraved William Powell & Son Boxlock Double Barrel
Shotguns -A) William Powell & Son Shotgun - Serial no. 12330, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid
rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Blued steel barrels with a single steel bead sight on the smooth
concave solid rib which is marked “WILLIAM POWELL & SON, 35 CARRS LANE, BIRMINGHAM.” along with a gold “1” at the
base, import mark on under rib near breech, light engraving at the breeches, chambers marked “1 1/8” oz. (2 1/2 inches) with
automatic ejectors, and choke constrictions of .006/.019 inches. The casehardened boxlock action displays attractive scroll engraving on
all sides, “WILLIAM POWELL & SON” signed on the left and right, a gold “1” on the toplever, double triggers, and a tang mounted automatic safety switch. Attractively figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings, including the Anson button release which has a third gold “1”, and straight grip stock with checkered flats, blank gold inscription oval, and checkered bare butt. Includes what appears to be the original oak and leather case that houses both “A” and “B” with load data and William Powell & Son trade label. Stock measurements: 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 inch drop at heel; 15 1/8 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 6 lbs. 9 oz.
CONDITION: Very good, retaining 95% reapplied blue finish on the barrels with some rubbing at the breech and muzzles, some fading to the rib markings, attractive silver patina on the action, and light handling evidence overall. There are a few small cracks coming off the forend shoe; otherwise, the wood
is very good with a few
dings and scratches and
mostly crisp checkering. The
case is fair with one strap and handle absent. Mechanically excellent. B) William Powell & Son Shotgun - Serial no. 12331, 12 gauge, 30 inch
solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. As “A” with “2”s in place of “1”s. Stock measurements: 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/16 inch
drop at heel; 15 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 6 lbs. 9 oz.
CONDITION: Very good, retaining 95% reapplied blue finish on the barrels, faint rib marking, attractive silver patina on the action, and overall light handling evidence. There are cracks on either side of the forend at the show and a tiny crack off the top tang; otherwise, the wood is very good with scattered scratches and mostly crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
