LOT 101 Engraved and Silver Accented Percussion American Long Rifle - NSN,
38 cal., 40 3/4 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened/silver/brass finish, curly maple stock. This classic 19th century American long rifle has a dot design on the muzzle, seven-groove rifling, a dovetailed blade front sight, dovetailed notch rear sight, light engraving around the sights, and two screws in the tang. The lock is marked “M M Maslin/WARRANTED” and has scroll patterns. The stock has over thirty silver accents/inlays, including arrow designs, hearts, a crescent moon face, and more. It also features a brass wear plate on the bottom of the forend, patchbox with pieced finial and side plates, long pierced toe plate running from the trigger guard to the buttplate. Exceptional Finely Engraved and German Silver Mounted/Decorated J. Harder Back Action Percussion Over/Under Combination Rifle/Shotgun - Serial no. 170, 24 gauge, 32 inch part octagon bbl., brown finish, walnut stock. Jacob Harder was a gunmaker active in Athens and
Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, as well as just across the state line from Athens in Waverly, New York. It features a .44 caliber rifled barrel over a 24 gauge shotgun barrel. The upper barrel has a German silver blade front sight, a notch rear sight, scroll engraving, “J. HARDER/LOCK HAVEN PA” marked on the upper flat near the breech, and additional scroll engraving and a German silver band at the breech end. There are additional German silver bands and scroll engraving on the breech plug, and the locks have light scroll and border engraving. The gun features adjustable double set triggers, a ramrod fit along the left side of the barrels, and a checkered buttstock with rounded cheekpiece, German silver furniture and accent plates, and some nice figure. CONDITION: Very fine with more than half of light Damascus patterns visible on the upper barrel and a mix of fading original brown finish and smooth gray and brown patina on the barrels, dark gray and brown patina on thee plugs and locks, attractive light aged patina on the German silver, and generally only light overall wear. The stock is also very fine and has crisp checkering, some minor scrapes and dings, and attractive figure. Mechanically excellent. A truly exceptional American percussion longarm! Exceptional Finely Engraved, German Silver Mounted/Decorated, and Gold Accented J. Harder Athens, Pennsylvania, Side by Side Percussion Combination Rifle/Shotgun - NSN, 44 gauge, 33 1/2 inch part octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/ gold/German silver finish, walnut stock. Jacob Harder was a gunmaker active in Athens and Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, as well as just across the state line from Athens in Waverly, New York, and is known to have produced other combination guns similar to this one. The left barrel is smoothbore and is measures .47 caliber (around 44 bore), and the right barrel is rifled and measures .33 caliber. The barrels are signed “J. HARDER” (right) and “ATHENS PA” (left), and both barrels have their own set of blade and notch sights, scroll engraving on the breech sections, pairs of inlaid silver bands ahead of the bolsters, and single gold bands at the breech end between the nipples. The standing breech also has a broad “U” shaped gold panel and floral scroll engraving. The locks have scroll engraving but are otherwise unmarked. The locks are fired using a shared double set trigger group. The lock for the rifle barrel requires the trigger to be set first. The furniture is German silver with floral scroll engraving and includes additional accent plates, a small compartment on the bottom of the buttstock ahead of the toe plate, and a cap/patch box on the right. The stock is gracefully
shaped and has a checkered wrist and an oval cheekpiece. CONDITION: Fine with attractive aged patina and generally crisp checkering on the German silver furniture, bright gold accents, dark aged patina on the silver, mottled gray and brown patina on the locks and barrels, some minor pitting, and general mild overall wear. The stock is very fine and has crisp checkering, the majority of the finish, some minor edge wear, and a few minor marks and scratches. Mechanically fine. has a checkered wrist and an slender, curved butt with a small cheek rest. The rifle is equipped with an adjustable single set trigger
and is currently configured so that the trigger must be set before cocking. CONDITION: Very good with smooth dark brown patina along the barrel, dark gray patina on the lock, mild oxidation, aged patina on the silver
and brass furniture and accents, and general mild overall wear. A few small pieces of inlays are absent or loose, and a screw is absent from the bottom of the belly brass overlay at the toe. The stock is also very good and has beautiful flame figure throughout, several cracks, added brass
repair plates at the ramrod entry pipe, pinned repair below the nose of the lock, and general light dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
LOT 102 Desirable B. Bahn & Bro. Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Marked Half-Stock Percussion .50 Caliber Rifle - NSN, 50 cal., 39 1/4 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. The Bahn Brothers, Bernard and George W. Bahn, established a hardware store in 1860 and also manufactured rifles early on. The barrel is marked “B BAHN & BRO CAPE GIRARDEAU MO” on top and is fitted with blade and notch sights and has a scroll pattern breech plug. The lock does not have any visible markings and appears to have a blacksmith made
hammer. The rifle also features a pewter forend cap, double set triggers, and brass furniture, including a small patchbox with grease inside. CONDITION: Very good, with an attractive dark brown patina on the lock and barrel, moderate oxidation and pitting, some rib separation, and attractive age darkened patina on the brass. The stock is also very good and has a semi-circular crack visible below the lock and on the left at the top of the wrist, and mild scattered dings and scratches. The lock does not hold at half or full-cock. The set triggers function fine. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750
