Engraved and Silver Inlaid Golden Age Style Flintlock Kentucky Long Rifle with Silver Kentucky Association
1985 Best Inlaid Rifle Award Plaque - NSN, 52 cal., 42 1/2 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened finish, maple stock. This is a beautiful example of a Golden Age style flintlock long
rifle. The silver plaque hanging from the trigger guard is marked “KENTUCKY RIFLE ASSN./1985/BEST INLAID RIFLE” on the front and “B.
KIRK & SON STERLING” on the back. The attractive curly maple stock has twenty-three silver inlays including several “tear drops” and a start inlay on the shallow cheekpiece. It also has brass furniture including an ornate patch box. Many of the components have engraving patterns including the “JOSH GOLCHER” lock. Locks manufactured by the Golcher family of Birmingham and Philadelphia in the 19th century
are commonly found on classic long rifles. It was standard practice for gunmakers to purchase the locks from outside craftsmen or importers. The smoothbore barrel has no visible markings and is equipped with the standard blade and notch sights found on most American long rifles. It includes a wooden ramrod and has a vent pick below the cheek rest.
CONDITION: Very good as refinished and reconverted to flintlock configuration. The barrel retains 75% plus of the artificial brown finish with some pitting showing through. The lock has an aged dark gray patina and overall mild pitting. The brass remains mostly bright while the silver has a lightly aged patina. The markings and engraving patterns are distinct. The revarnished stock is very good with beautiful tightly grouped flame figure and only scattered minor dings and scratches. The lock functions fine, but the touch hole is not centered on the flash pan. This is a fine example of an award winning Golden Age style flintlock rifle!
