Engraved Krider Marked Half-Stock Percussion Target Rifle with Tube Sight and Accessories -
NSN, 36 cal., 30 inch part octagon bbl., brown/blue/silver/German silver finish, walnut stock. Manufactured c. 1860s. It is marked “KRIDER PHILADA” on the barrel, “KRIDER” on the lock, and what is likely “J KRIDER PHILADA” inside the patchbox. The lock and barrel markings are stamped with uneven letters rather than as single stamps as would be expected for a Krider rifle. The lock and the silver and German silver furniture have scroll engraving. The rifle is equipped with a 36 1/8 inch long tube sight with post and
notch sights on top, an adjustable single set trigger, taps for rear sight mounting on the breech plug and breech end of the barrel, and a half-length stock with pewter forend cap and checkered wrist. Includes a pistol sized wood case with a reproduction Krider label inside the lid, a false muzzle and starter, a few bullets and balls, a powder flask, a screwdriver, a mold for round balls and short conical bullets, cap tin, a globe front sight, and an adjustable rear sight.

Finely Engraved Exhibition Quality German Silver Mounted M.S. Sanderson Maker Marked Half-Stock Percussion Target Rifle with False Muzzle - Serial no. 41, 36 cal., 24 1/8 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened/German silver finish, walnut stock. This is an extraordinary example of this maker’s work. The barrel has a removable false muzzle, dovetailed front sight base with replacement silver blade, notch rear sight with added higher sight blade, a tap with screw in place near the breech, scroll engraving, a cleanout screw on the bolster, “41” and “1860” on the bottom flat at the muzzle, and “M.S. SANDERSON/MAKER./CAST-STEEL” marked on the upper left flat by the rear sight. The lock is marked “M.S. SANDERSON” and has border and scroll engraving. The upper tang has a tap for a peep sight or scope with a post in place. The rifle is equipped with double set triggers. The ramrod rides in ferrules attached to the underside of the barrel and enters through the pewter forend cap. The stock has extensive German silver furniture and accent plates secured with small screws and engraved with mainly floral scroll patterns. There is also a bird scene and a reposed buck on the patchbox. M.S. Sanderson was a riflemaker from Vermont around the late 1850s to early 1860s. CONDITION: Very good with mostly brown patina on the barrel, gray patina on the lock, minor oxidation, crisp engraving and markings, light aged patina on the German silver, and mild overall wear. The repaired stock is also very good and has general mild scrapes and dings, some filler visible in the wrist and on the left flat, and some nice figure. The adjustment screw for the set triggers is absent; otherwise, mechanically fine. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
LOT 105 Exceptional American Half-Stock Percussion Target Rifle by W.L. Hudson of Cincinnati, Ohio - NSN, 37 cal., 30 1/4 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock. William L. Hudson Sr. (1812-1861) of Wales immigrated in 1837, became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1848, and worked in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a gunmaker and gunsmith in the antebellum era and beginning of the Civil War. This exceptional rifle has an octagon barrel with short turned down section at the muzzle for use with a
starter (no included), dovetailed blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, “W.L. HUDSON/MAKER/CIN.O” inscribed in a banner with scroll engraved ends, large casehardened breech pug with pierced platinum plug on the bolster, and a ramrod secured in two ferrules and a long rib/tube. The ramrod has a covered ball worm. The upper tang has a tap for mounting a “lollipop” peep sight (absent). The back action lock has the same maker’s mark as the barrel engraved behind the hammer. The rifle is fired using adjustable double set, single phase triggers. It has a spurred iron trigger guard and a nicely figured walnut buttstock with a casehardened crescent buttplate and toeplate. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine with 90% plus original brown finish remaining on the barrel, most of the bright original niter blue on the rear sight, 75% original case colors, smooth gray on the faded areas, minor oxidation at the breech, and generally only light age and storage related wear. The wood is very fine and has attractive flame figure, filled knot on the comb and left side of the wrist, and slight handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000

Beautifully Engraved Percussion Schuetzen Rifle with False Muzzle - NSN, 38 cal., 30 1/4 inch octagon bbl., blue/ casehardened/German silver finish, walnut stock. This rifle has no visible markings, but it has beautiful Germanic engraving patterns. The side plate depicts a German silver inlaid mermaid blowing a horn. The rifle has a false muzzle, globe front sight, dual gold bands on the breech plug, tang nted peep sight, adjustable double set triggers, mainly German silver furniture (including the spurred trigger guard and Swiss style buttplate), and a nicely figured half-length stock with a checkered wrist and a large cheek rest. The trigger plate has a tap for fitting a palm rest (not included). CONDITION: Fine with 90% plus of the period refinished blue on the barrel, dark patina and mild oxidation/pitting on the breech and lock, attractive aged patina and crisp engraving on the furniture, and generally minor overall wear. The stock is very fine and has attractive figure and grain, crisp checkering, minor dings and scratches, and a small chip at the tail of the left stock flat. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000
CONDITION: Good with a mix of faded finish and smooth brown patina on the barrel, half of the period refinished blue remaining on the lock and hammer, aged patina on the furniture, mottled mix of finish and dark brown patina on the tube sight, and general mild overall wear. The refinished stock is also good and has crisp enhanced checkering, faint evidence of repairs in the wrist, some gaps around the upper tang, a small hairline crack at the breech on the left, minor flakes by the bolster, and general light dings and scratches. The lock slips from full-cock, but the rifle appears to function otherwise. The case and accessories are very good with mild storage wear. Provenance: The Wayne Connor Collection.
