LOT 1173 Colt Richards-Mason Cartridge Conversion Model 1851 Navy Revolver - Serial
no. 504, 38 RF cal., 7 1/2 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened/nickel finish, walnut grips. This revolver is one of around 3,800 manufactured in the mid-1870s using previously unfinished and unassembled parts. These revolvers were numbered within their own 1-3800 range, and this revolver would have been an early example given it has the matching three-digit serial number “504” on the cylinder, barrel, frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The loading gate has assembly number “639.” The barrel has a brass cone front sight, the one-line New York address, a loading lever fitted to the right, and a partially plugged loading lever slot (rammer hole open). The frame is marked with the “COLTS/PATENT” marking on the left, and the left side of the trigger guard has “36 CAL.” The cylinder has the usual naval battle scene.
CONDITION: Very fine with 85% bright original high polish blue finish on the barrel, traces of original finish on the frame and the balance otherwise smooth brown patina, crisp cylinder scene, 80% plus original case colors, 98% plus original nickel plating on the grip straps, and light marks and scratches. The grip is very fine and has mild lower edge wear, small dings and scratches, and the vast majority of the original finish. Mechanically excellent.
