The design is repeated on the loading gate, although reduced to fit the gate area.
The top strap has spreading bonnet design with balanced scroll flowing from the center front to rear. The hammer features scroll motifs. “Duchess” is engraved in script on the back strap. On the “B” gun the recoil shield exhibits an elaborate rising sun motif casting rays with a double wedge and scroll border. The loading gate features an intricate clamshell design with a scroll border at the rear and a bullet border at the front. The top strap has a broad braided rope motif with punch dot background. The hammer features leaf and scroll motifs. The barrel caliber marking is inlaid in gold. Additional gold inlays include the thin barrel bands at the muzzle and breech, thin band on the rear of the cylinder, and simple line border terminating in scrolls on the hammer, frame, and grip straps. “Duchess” is inlaid in gold on the back strap. Each revolver wears a one piece bird’s grip featuring scrimshaw Rampant
Colt motif with a lightning bolt striking from a storm cloud in the background on the left side and the initials “LKP” on the right side. The revolvers retain the two-line Colt Hartford barrel address and three-line Colt patent
dates marking followed by an encircled
Rampant Colt on the frame. Matching
respective serial numbers are on the
frame, trigger guard, and back strap.
Revolver “B” has the matching partial
serial number “777” on the rear cylinder
face. Each revolver comes with a Bianchi
black leather holster.
CONDITION: Extremely fine overall as elaborately embellished by the late premier
Master Engraver Howard Dove. The revolver retains 99% of the nickel and niter blue
finishes with crisp engraving and highly attractive scrimshaw grips. Mechanically excellent. B) Colt Sheriff’s Model 1877 LiVghtning Revolver - Serial no. 126777, 38 LC cal., 3 1/2 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, smooth grips. See “A.”
