Special Order Winchester Semi-Deluxe Model 1892 Takedown Lever Action Short Rifle in .44 W.C.F. - Serial no. 659570, 44-40 WCF cal., 20 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1912. This semi-deluxe Winchester Model 1892 rifle has several highly sought after and rare special features such the 20 inch short barrel and checkered pistol grip stock. Per Winchester expert and author George Madis, “One of each 850 rifles in this model had barrels shorter than standard.” He also noted, “The short rifles are rare, since most people preferred the lighter weight carbines if they wanted a shorter gun” (The “Winchester Book,” page 375 and 377). As for the checkered pistol grip stock configuration, Madis calculated, “Only 1 of each 700 models 92 had pistol grips; only one of each 800 had checkering
Winchester grip cap. The left side of the lower tang is stamped “982 S 076.” The assembly number “982” is repeated on the stock inlet, the butt of the stock, and buttplate. A three piece cleaning rod is included.
CONDITION: Extremely fine. The barrel, magazine tube, bolt, and frame retain 90% plus original blue finish. The takedown collar retains 60% of the original blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces retain 85% original blue finish with a smooth brown-gray patina on the balance. The wood is very fine with some minor handling marks
and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. This special order semi-deluxe Winchester Model 1892 takedown short rifle is a rarity in Winchester collecting that is missing from even the most advanced collections.
Estimate: 11,000 - 16,000

the rifle remains in the configuration laid out in the factory letter and has standard markings. CONDITION: Very fine with 85% plus original blue finish, the vast majority of the original case colors
