Exceptionally Fine Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1885 High
Wall Schuetzen Rifle with Factory Letter - Serial no. 84083, 38-55 cal., 30 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This deluxe Winchester Model 1885 Schuetzen rifle has several special order features confirmed by the included
factory letter. The letter confirms the 30 inch barrel in .38-55 caliber, casehardened receiver, Schuetzen set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, mid-range Vernier and
windgauge sights, no rear sight seat, Helm buttplate, Dutch cheek piece, spur lever, and palm rest. The letter also states the rifle was received in the warehouse on September 5, 1899 and shipped the next day. The no. 4 heavy barrel has been unaltered as it still lacks a
rear sight seat. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line Winchester New Haven address and “38-55” caliber designation. The lower tang has the patent dates marking and the serial
number. The finger spur lever is decorated with light engraved scrollwork at the top. The casehardened
receiver is fitted with double set triggers. The deluxe XXX walnut forearm and pistol grip stock are checkered. The
forearm has an ebony tip insert. The stock features a perch belly, factory hard rubber grip cap, and Helm buttplate. The left side of
the lower tang is marked “8234 XXX US.” The assembly number “8234” is repeated on the buttplate and butt of the stock.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 85% original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The receiver retains 90% original case colors. Traces of original blue remain on the lever. The buttplate has a mixed brown-gray patina. The wood is excellent with some minor dings and scratches and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Documented Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1885 High Wall Schuetzen Rifle with Matted Barrel, Scope, and Factory Letter - Serial no. 104662, 32-40 cal., 30 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, deluxe walnut stock. This deluxe Winchester Model 1885 Schuetzen rifle has numerous special order features confirmed by the included factory letter that make
it a highly sought after single shot rifle. The factory letter confirms the 30
inch octagon barrel in .32-40 caliber, three matted barrel sides, Schuetzen set trigger, checkered pistol grip
stock, mid-range and windgauge sights, no rear sight seat, Helm buttplate, spur lever, palm rest, and Schuetzen cheekpiece. The letter also confirms the rifle was received in the warehouse on February 16, 1907, and shipped on
February 18. The included copy of the factory ledger shows the word “Black” written over the shipping date. The no. 4 heavy barrel is fitted with a spirit lever windgauge front sight and a period, non-factory installed Winchester A5 scope. As
confirmed by the factory letter, the top flat and upper left and right flats are matted. Winchester expert and author George
Madis pointed out, “Matted barrels were produced in very limited numbers.” To accommodate the special order matting, the left barrel flat is factory
stamped with the two-line Winchester legend, a Winchester factory oval proof, and the “32-40” caliber designation. A second Winchester factory oval proof is correctly stamped on top of the receiver. The deluxe walnut forearm and pistol grip stock are checkered. The buttstock features a hard rubber factory grip cap, perch belly, cheekpiece, and Helm
buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked “2823 X US.” The assembly number “2823” is repeated on the butt of the stock and back of the buttplate.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel and receiver retain 75% plus original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance and limited pitting/spotting. The lever, hammer, and breech block retain 95% original case colors. The buttplate has a mottled brown patina. The palm rest has been repaired. The forearm has a long horizontal crack visible (left side), and there are a couple stress lines; otherwise, the wood is very fine with some minor dings and scratches and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
