   LOT 469
Unique Prototype Winchester Single Shot Bolt Action Pistol Serial Number 3 - Serial no. 3, 22 S L cal., 8 inch round bbl., blue/silver finish, walnut grips. Developed by Winchester exploring the idea of producing single shot pistols based on the action of the Model 1900/1902 rifles. George Madis believed that less than 100 of these prototypes were produced. There may have actually been a small number commercially produced and sold through dealers in Australia and New Zealand. A design drawing of a similar example is pictured in “The Winchester Book” on page 574, and a similar example is pictured on 573. This example illustrates clearly that many parts from Model 1900 and 1902 rifles were used in producing these prototypes as the barrel is marked with the standard barrel address and model nomenclature seen on the Model 1900 rifle. The beginning of the address is partially obscured by the front sight but “MODEL 1900” is almost perfectly centered on the pistol length barrel. Serial number 3 and a triangular proof are visible on the bottom rear of the receiver. The grip is smooth walnut with a darker piece of accent wood running down the spine. This pistol also has a silver plated frame, inferring this specific example may have been finished by the factory and presented to someone of importance. CONDITION: Very fine as a Winchester factory prototype, retains 75% plus of the original blue finish, the balance having thinned to a smooth grey patina, and a few scattered small patches of light oxidation, while the frame retains 90% of the attractively aged silver plating. The grip is also very fine with some light handling marks scattered throughout. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
