Attractive Greco-Roman Motif Toledo Style Damascened Cane - During the 19th and 20th centuries, canes reached their pinnacle of popularity, becoming a must have accessory for those wishing to publicly proclaim their social and economic status. This example would have been a fantastic addition to a worldly gentleman’s wardrobe, showing somewhat exotic styling by Western European
or American standards. The handle is a blued steel sphere which has been attractively engraved and gold inlaid in
the Damascene style popularized in Toledo, Spain at the time. It features a Greco-Roman helmed bust on top at the center and is surrounded by various bands and Arabesque vine designs. The ebonized hardwood shaft is tipped with a metal ferrule. It measures 36 3/4 inches overall.
CONDITION: Very fine, the handle retaining most of the blue and gold finishes, some scattered patches of light oxidation, and crisp engraving. The shaft has some scattered minor dings and scuffs, and retains most of the ebonized finish. Estimate: 1,500 - 2,500

have been a fantastic addition to a worldly gentleman’s wardrobe, showing somewhat exotic styling by Western European or American standards. The handle is a blued steel small hook shape which has been attractively engraved and gold inlaid in the Damascene style popularized in Toledo, Spain at the time. It features Arabesque vine and border designs, as well as three wyverns mixed in among the floral motifs. The hardwood shaft shows nice figure and is tipped with medium toned horn. It measures 33 inches overall. CONDITION: Very fine, retains most of the original gold inlaid Damascene patterns with a few areas showing some light wear. The shaft is also very fine retaining most of the varnish with some scattered light handling marks and flaking, as well as some mild wear on the horn tip.

Cane - Beginning in approximately the 16th century, canes gradually became more popular among the upper echelons of society, reaching its pinnacle around the late-19th to early-20th centuries. They became
far more than just an
accessory to assist with mobility, and more of a symbol of ones status and wealth. This example would have been a very fitting piece for a worldly gentleman, with the grip displaying gold Damascene inlays such as those popularized in Toledo, Spain. The hooked grip is blued with some gentle fluting
and extensive gold Damascene patterns featuring floral and border motifs. The smooth hardwood shaft is tipped with dark horn. It measures 36 inches overall.
CONDITION: Fine, retains most of the blue and gold finishes with a light speckling of brown patina scattered throughout. The shaft is very good with a few scattered light scuffs and handling marks and a couple moderate insect holes in the tip.
