barrels with single brass bead front sight on the matted concave solid rib which is marked “SIMSON & Co. S.A.G. AWTOWELO. SUHL”, 1951 dated German
proofs, “12” engraved on the bottom of the
lump, 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic
ejectors, and 1 3/4 inch wedges of floral scroll engraving at either breech. The coin finished sideclipped sidelock action displays beautiful full coverage floral scroll engraving surrounding three highly detailed gold inlaid
game scenes. The left lockplate shows a roe buck and three does in a forested scene with
a single quail, the right has a pair of foxes flushing a trio of mallards from a pond, and
the underside depicts a dog with a quail in his mouth and in the background. The
engraving extends to the toplever, tangs, and triggerguard, which shows another gold game scene depicting a pair of woodcocks. The gun features double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety switch. The lightly figured stock and forend display beautifully executed contrasting inlays hearkening back to the work done on German wheellock masterworks featuring thin borders, oak leaves and a pair of pheasants on the left. The stock also features a dog and pheasant scene carved on the left as well as a roaring red stag on the right.
The splinter forend has engraved fittings and a “12” on the shoe and the pistol grip stock has a contrasting grip cap and checkered buttplate. Includes an extra matching numbered 16 gauge barrel set which measure 28 3/8 inches and has 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors, and matching engraved wedges and splinter forend with “16” in
place of the “12”. Also includes a leather bound takedown case by Akah.
Barrel measurements for the 16 gauge set (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .673/.674 inches; choke constriction .028/.038 inches; minimum wall thickness .035/.039 inches. Barrel and stock measurements for the 12 gauge set (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both .719 inches; choke constriction .029/.036 inches; minimum wall thickness .039/.043 inches; 1 3/4 inch drop at comb; 2 13/16 inch drop at heel; 14 1/2 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs 2 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 98% plus original blue, coin, and gold finishes with minor handling evidence mostly in the wood, a tiny chip at the lower right stock horn, and sharp checkering overall on the stock and forend. The extra barrel set is excellent and the case is very fine. Mechanically excellent.
