Factory Engraved John Dickson & Son Sidelock Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial
no. 5849, 12 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., black/brushed bright finish, walnut stock. Completed circa 1906
according to page 81 of Nigel Brown’s “British Gunmakers Volume Two”. Built with blued steel dovetail lump barrels
with a single bead sight on the smooth concave game rib which is marked “JOHN DICKSON & SON. 21 FREDERICK
STREET, EDINBURGH.”, a band of engraving at the breech, 1979 dated London reproof marks, import mark on right
tube, and 2 1/2 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels are fitted to the brushed bright finished sidelock
bar-action engraved with near full coverage floral scrollwork surrounding “JOHN DICKSON & SON” signatures on either lockplate and continuing onto the blued
toplever, triggerguard, and lower tang. The gun features a hidden third fastener, a single selective trigger, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” indicator.
The gun is fitted with an attractively figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved iron and Anson button and a straight hand stock with blank inscription
oval and a Silver’s type recoil pad. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed at .728 inches and measured .729/.731 inches;
choke constriction .013/.032 inches; minimum wall thickness .030/.030 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 inch drop at heel; 14 1/8 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 14 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine as professionally restored, retaining 98% deep black finish, 99% brushed bright finish, light handling evidence a small split in the recoil pad base, and sharp checkering on the stock and
forend. Mechanically excellent.

Factory Engraved W. W. Greener 8 Bore Double Barrel Heavy
Duck Hammer Shotgun - Serial no. 25984, 8 gauge, 36 inch solid rib bbl., brown/
casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1882 according to page 198 of Graham
Greener’s “The Greener Story”. Built with browned Damascus steel barrels featuring a single bead sight on
the smooth concave solid rib which is marked with the Greener address and treble wedge fast patent, engraving
at the breech, and 3 1/2 inch chambers with extractor. The barrels are fitted to the casehardened hammer fired
action which displays attractive scroll engraving surrounding “W.W. GREENER” signatures on either side and
continuing onto the hammer, trigger guard, toplever, and tangs. The gun features double triggers and rebounding hammers. The gun is fitted with
a lovely well-figured and multi-point checkered forend with engraved iron and Deeley latch and a horn tip as well as a Prince of Wales stock with blank gold inscription
oval and a steel buttplate. Stock measurements: 1 15/16 inch drop at comb; 2 1/2 inch drop at heel; 14 3/16 inch length of pull; slight cast-off; weight 13 lbs. 14 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine as restored, retaining 98% brown finish with nice Damascus patterns, most of the attractive case colors, small split in the wood at the rear of the
left lockplate, mild handling evidence, some scratches on the wood, and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.

Percussion Inserts and Case - Serial

finish, walnut stock. Completed circa
1870 according to page 106 of Nigel
Brown’s “British Gunmakers Volume
One: London”, this gun was built with browned Damascus steel barrels featuring a single
bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked “J. D. DOUGALL & SONS 8
BENNETT STREET (St. JAMES’S St.) LONDON”, a band of engraving at the breech, period
London proof marks, and chambers with a single extractor. The barrels are fitted to the
patent hammer fired Lockfast action which displays highly attractive tight scroll engraving
with “J. D. DOUGALL.” signatures on either lockplate, “J. D. DOUGALL/PATENT LOCKFAST” on the
underside, and the crest of the Prince of Wales at the base of the rear tang showing three ostrich feathers and a crown
over “ICH DIEN” (I Serve), indicating a connection to the then Prince of Wales, and later King of England, Edward VII (Albert
Edward). The gun is fitted with a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved iron and
wedge fastener as well as a straight hand stock with carved drop points, a blank gold inscription
oval, and engraved heel and toe plates around the checkered butt. Included with the gun are a
set of factory brass percussion chamber inserts numbered to the gun which, in unison with the
included percussion nipples, can convert the gun to a percussion configuration, something that
may have been quite useful in the early days of shot shells. Also included is a maker’s leather
takedown case, some cleaning tools, spare strikers, and some loading tools. Stock measurements: 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 13 7/8 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 11 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine as professionally restored, retaining 99% brown finish with strong Damascus patterns, smooth attractive silver patina on the action, a repaired crack at the lower left stock
finger, light handling evidence, and sharp checkering on the wood. Mechanically excellent. The case is fair with wear and tearing.
