Very Scarce and Exceptional New Hampshire Marked U.S. Colt Second Model
Dragoon Percussion Revolver with “U.S. DRAGOONS” Cylinder - Serial no.
8234, 44 cal., 7 1/2 inch part round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut grips.
Manufactured in 1851. This is an exceptional, highly desirable, U.S. and New
Hampshire militia marked Colt Second Model Dragoon revolver. The Second Model
Dragoons are already by far the rarest of the primary Colt Dragoon revolvers. Per
Sutherland and Wilson in “The Book of Colt Firearms,” only approximately 2,700
Second Model Dragoons were manufactured compared to 7,000 of the First Model
Dragoons and 10,500 Third Model Dragoons. A large percentage of these revolvers
were manufactured for the Army. This particular revolver is even rarer as it is one of
only less than a few hundred that were reportedly issued to the New Hampshire and
Massachusetts militias. The revolver has the correct combination of square trigger
guard and rectangular cylinder stops, which are second model features. The part
round barrel is fitted with a nickel-silver blade front sight and stamped with the one-
line New York City address on top and the “NEW HAMPSHIRE” militia marking on the
left side. The left of the frame is stamped “COLT’S/PATENT/U.S.”
