The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Ranger and Indian
fight scene and the desirable “U.S. DRAGOONS/8234/COLT’S
PATENT” marking. Matching serial numbers are on the barrel,
frame, trigger guard, back strap, loading lever, cylinder,
and cylinder arbor pin, with period replacement wedge
numbered “9259”. Single letter inspector marks on the barrel,
cylinder, trigger guard, and back strap. Bordered script “JH”
(James Hawkins) and “WAT” (William A. Thornton) inspection
cartouches stamped on each side of the grip. Many of these
U.S. contract revolvers saw continued hard use on the frontier
as well as wide use during the Civil War in the hands of both
Union and Confederate troopers, making examples in this
higher state of condition very difficult to find today.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% plus original blue finish on the
barrel and cylinder, 40% original case colors strongest on the
right side of the frame and base of the loading lever, smooth
brown and gray patina on the balance, a few patches of minor
pitting, with all of the cylinder safety pins standing proud,
attractive aged patina on the brass, and a very crisp cylinder
scene and markings in the metal overall. Grip is also very fine,
with defined edges, some minor dents, and clear cartouches.
Mechanically excellent. This is a scarce opportunity to be
able to acquire an exceptional example of a very scarce New
Hampshire Militia marked U.S. Colt Second Model Dragoon,
worthy of the finest Colt collection!
Provenance: The Andrew Singer Collection.
