Exquisite 1833 Dated Exhibition Grade Relief Chiseled, Gold Inlaid, and Relief Carved Double
Barrel Percussion Shotgun by F. Nowak of Prague - Serial no. 1055, 16 gauge, 27 1/2 inch solid rib
bbl., gold/brown/casehardened finish, deluxe walnut stock. Franz Nowak (1784-1857) was a leading
gunmaker in Prague and served as the Prague Gunsmiths Guild’s lead in the 1830s and 1840s and won
awards from exhibitions in Prague. See page 880 of “Der Neue Stockel” by Heer. Given the “1833” date on
the face of the standing breech, this gun may have been made for the industrial exhibition held at the
Prague Castle in 1833 to celebrate the visit of Emperor Francis I. There were also additional exhibitions
in the city in 1838 and 1844. The beautifully patterned Damascus barrels feature gold inlaid bands at the
muzzle, a gold radiating design around the bead front sight, “F. NOWAK IN PRAG.” in gold inlaid script on
the rib towards the breech, and relief chiseled foliate and scroll designs and bands with gold inlay at the
breech. The breech plugs are chiseled, engraved, and gold inlaid en suite, and their rib features a relief
chiseled portrait of a seated dog with a gold inlaid frame. “IW” is marked on the face of the standing
breech plug hooks, and faint Liege proof marks are on the underside of the barrels.
