Very Attractive Engraved, Relief Carved, Gold Inlaid, and
Gilded Percussion Conversion Jaeger Rifle by Anton Klein of Vienna
- NSN, 28 bore/.55 cal., 29 3/4 inch octagon bbl., brown/gold/bright finish,
walnut stock. Gunmaker Anton Klein is noted as active c. 1740-1760 in Vienna. This rifle was later
professionally converted to percussion in the early 19th century. The Damascus barrel has seven-groove
rifling, a dovetailed brass blade front sight surrounded by gold inlays, dovetailed gilt brass notch rear sight with
two folding leaves, “Anton Klein in Wienn.” in gold inlay on top of the breech section, gold inlaid designs at the breech,
an engraved drum bolster with platinum plug, and a short engraved iron tang. The lock is signed “Anton Klein/in Wienn.” and has
rococo style scroll engraving. The rifle is equipped with double set triggers. The gilt brass mounts feature a variety of hunting
scenes and scrollwork. The full-length stock has molding and relief carving.
CONDITION: Good with a mix of older brown finish and dark brown patina along the barrel along with distinct Damascus patterns, silver-gray patina and minor wear on the lock,
mix of gilt finish and aged patina on the mounts, a crack in the buttplate, some repairs, and mild overall wear. The undersized stock is also good with distinct carving, some cracks and
repairs, and mild dents and scratches. Mechanically functions.

NSN, 28 bore cal., 25 3/4
inch octagon bbl., blue/
bright/silver finish, walnut stock. This pair of hunting rifles was produced by Josef Fruwirth (1722-1797) of Vienna,
Austria, and are signed “Ios: FruWirth in Wienn.” in silver inlay on the swamped octagonal barrels which have seven-groove rifling, dovetailed
silver blade front sights surrounded by silver inlays, dovetailed notch rear sights with folding leaves and foliate engraved finials, inlaid floral
and scroll patterns at the breeches, gold lined sunken maker’s marks on top at the breeches, and “1” and “2” on the barrel tangs. The lightly
rounded locks are signed “Ios: FruWirth/in Wienn.” and have grooved borders and foliate scroll engraving. The mounts are silver. The walnut
stocks have molding and raised relief and incised foliate scroll carving, wood trigger guards, and silver mounted wood patchboxes lids.
CONDITION: Fine with 30% original blue remaining on the barrel, silver-gray and brown patina on the balance of the lock and barrel along
with moderate oxidation, very dark aged patina on the silver inlays and mounts, and mild wear. The stock is good and has some chips and
cracks in the forend, scattered scratches and dings, and crisp carving. Mechanically functions. B) Fruwirth Flintlock Jaeger Rifle - NSN, 28
bore cal., 25 3/4 inch octagon bbl., blue/bright/silver finish, walnut stock. As described in “A.”
CONDITION: Very good with traces of original blue remaining in the protected areas of the barrel, silver-gray and brown patina on the
balance of the lock and barrel along with moderate oxidation, very dark aged patina on the silver inlays and mounts, and mild wear. The
stock is good and has minor cracks, scattered scratches and dings, partially loose trigger guard, and crisp carving. Mechanically functions.
