Luftwaffe Contract
Krieghoff Two-Digit “36” Date P.08 Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol
with Matching Magazine - Serial no. 4321, 9 mm Luger cal., 4 inch round
bbl., blue/straw finish, checkered plastic grips. Manufactured in 1936, one
of approximately 500 Luger pistols manufactured that year by Krieghoff with a “36” date marking (in the
3900-4700 serial number range) under contract for the German Luftwaffe (air force) as shown in the table on
page 261 of “Third Reich Lugers” by Jan Still. As only official supplier of Luger pistols for the Luftwaffe, Krieghoff
produced examples display a much finer fit and finish (more in line with commercial production) than other Lugers
of the era, and even rate among the finest examples of the Luger ever produced. Features fixed blade front and notch rear
sights, the “36” two-digit date marked on top of the barrel extension, the “H(anchor)K/KRIEGHOFF/SUHL” manufacturer marking on top of the toggle
link, drooped wing “eagle/2” proofs on the barrel and barrel extension, along with drooped wing “eagle” firing proofs on the barrel, barrel extension,
and breech block. Matching full serial numbers on the frame, barrel, and barrel extension, along with matching “21” partial serial numbers visible on small
parts. Fitted with a pair of brown checkered composite grips and a nickel plated magazine with matching numbered and dropped wing
“eagle/2” proofed alloy base.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 90% plus original blue finish and 60%
straw colors with minor edge wear, light cycling wear,
silvering on the straw colored parts, some brown patina on
the toggle, some dried grease, along with crisp and bright
markings and proofs. The grips are exceptionally fine with a few
minor handling marks in the well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. Overall
an attractive example of a Pre-World War II era Luftwaffe contract “36” date marked
Krieghoff Luger pistol with a matching magazine!
