Factory Engraved Charles Daly/H. A. Lindner 10 Gauge Diamond
Quality Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun with Presentation Inscription
- Serial no. 1536, 10 gauge, 32 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock.
Built by gunmaker H. A. Lindner for American retailer Charles Daly with browned Damascus
steel barrels featuring a single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked “CHARLES
DALY FINEST LAMINATED STEEL BARRELS DIAMOND QUALITY PRESENTED TO PHIL WEBBER JR. BY THE St. LOUIS
SPORTSMAN’S CLUB 1880.”, H. A. Lindner’s “crossed pistols” maker’s mark on either tube, attractive scroll engraving on the
doll’s head extension, choke constrictions of .010/.015 inches, and 2 7/8 inch chambers with extractor. The barrels are fitted to
the casehardened action which displays wonderful scroll engraving surrounding “CHARLES DALY” banners on either lockplate and a
dog and two does on the left and a fox set to flush a pair of woodcocks on the right. The gun features rebounding hammers and double triggers. The gun is fitted with a beautifully figured and multi-
point checkered forend with engraved iron and a round semi-pistol grip stock with teardrop carved drop points, an inlaid horn grip cap, a blank silver inscription oval, and a horn grip cap. Stock
measurements: 1 13/16 inch drop at comb; 2 5/8 inch drop at heel; 13 13/16 inch length
of pull; weight 9 lbs. 14 oz.
CONDITION: Fine overall, retaining strong Damascus patterns on the cleaned barrels,
attractive smooth silver patina on the case colored components, some handling marks,
edge wear on the wood, and mostly smoothed but visible checkering. The gun is slightly off-face, but otherwise
mechanically functions.

according to page 193 of Donald
Dallas’ book “Purdey Gun & Rifle Makers: The Definitive History”. The gun
has browned Damascus steel barrels featuring a single bead sight on the
smooth concave solid rib which is marked “J. PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD
STREET, LONDON.” along with a flourish of scroll engraving, 2001 dated
Birmingham nitro proof marks, 2 3/4 inch chambers with a single extractor. The barrels are fitted to the
casehardened hammer fired action which displays attractive classic Purdey rose & scroll engraving surrounding “PURDEY” signatures
on either lockplate and “PATENT” on the toplever. This engraving style was introduced by Purdey engraver James Lucus in the 1870s, mostly likely
meaning this gun was engraved by him. The gun features engraved rebounding hammers and double triggers in the blued trigger guard. The gun is fitted
with a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered forend with engraved iron as well as a straight hand stock with teardrop carved drop points, diamond
shaped cross section, “RAR” in the silver inscription oval, and a leather covered recoil pad. Per the consignor, this gun was completed for a Dr. Peter Gowland.
Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech proofed at 16/16.1 mm (.630/.634 inches) and measured .634/.637 inches; choke
constriction .022/.023 inches; minimum wall thickness .025/.025 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 1/8 inch drop at heel; 15 3/16 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 5 lbs. 10 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine as professionally restored, with 98% brown finish on the barrels, strong patches of original case colors on the action with the balance a fine grey, light handling evidence, 98% blue
finish on the trigger guard, tang, and toplever, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent.
