Factory Gerhard Liebscher Master Game Scene Engraved Gebruder
Merkel 28 Gauge Model 280 EL Double Barrel Shotgun Two Barrel Set with
Case - Serial no. 384001, 28 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., blue/coin finish, walnut
stock. Built with blued Krupp steel dovetail lump barrels featuring a single brass bead sight on the matted
concave game rib which is marked “280 EL 28 GA”, standard factory markings, dual bands of engraving at the breech,
2001 dated German proof marks, chokes marked “VZ”/”1/2”, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels are
fitted to the coin finished scalloped boxlock action which displays attractive scroll engraving surrounding a pair of running hares
on the left, a pair of flushing quail on the right, and the “SUHL” mark on the underside. The engraving is signed “G.L.” on the left
side of the action for factory Master Engraved Gerhard Liebscher. The gun features a Greener crossbolt, intercepting sears, double
triggers,
bushed firing pins, and a tang mounted automatic safety. The gun is
fitted with a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered forend with
engraved coin finished Deeley latch and iron as well as a straight stock
with diamond shaped hand and a factory black buttplate. Included is
a second matching numbered 28 inch .410 bore barrel set marked “360
EL .410 GA” with 3 inch chambers and its own forend. Also includes an
attractive maker’s brown and green leather flat case containing cleaning
tools, oilers, and snap caps for both barrels. Barrel measurements for the extra
set (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed and measured 10.3 mm (.406
inches); choke constriction .017/.033 inches. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter
nine inches from the breech proofed and measured at 14 mm (.551 inches); choke constriction
.010/.020 inches; minimum wall thickness .029/.030 inches; 1 5/16 inch drop at comb; 2 1/2 inch
drop at heel; inch length of 14 3/8 pull; weight 5 lbs. 6 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, with 99% original blue and coin finishes, minimal handling
evidence, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent. The case and
extra barrel set are also excellent.

Boxlock Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. 5872,
28 gauge, 24 7/8 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Built
with blued special nickel steel dovetail
lump barrels featuring a single nickel
bead sight on the raised flat hand filed
game rib, “Flli. PIOTTI” and GARDONE
V.T.” marked on the right and left tubes
respectively, single band of engraving at the
breech, front sling stud on under rib, 1972 dated Italian proof marks, and 2 3/4 inch chambers
with automatic ejectors. The barrels are mated to the vibrantly casehardened scalloped boxlock action
which displays near full coverage grape vine and scroll engraving over a matted background which
continues onto the trigger guard, pierced toplever, and both tangs. The engraving is signed “Muffolini”
on the triggerplate for Italian Master Engraver Stefano Muffolini. The gun features dual triggers and a
tang mounted manual safety. The gun is fitted with a nicely figured and multi-point checkered forend with
blued engraved iron as well as a straight hand stock with rear sling stud and checkered butt. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter
nine inches from the breech both proofed at 14.3 mm (.563 inches) and measured .570/.571 inches; choke constriction .001/.042 inches; minimum wall thickness .018/.019 inches; 1 3/8
inch drop at comb; 2 inch drop at heel; 14 1/16 inch length of pull; weight 5 lbs. 1 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retaining 99% original blue and casehardened finishes with plum hue on the trigger guard, minor handling evidence, and sharp checkering on the stock
and forend. Mechanically excellent.
