Pair of Engraved and Gold Inlaid Roy Vail 28 Gauge
Sidelock Double Barrel Shotguns with Case -A) Roy Vail Shotgun - Serial no.
71163, 28 gauge, 26 inch solid rib bbl., blue/coin/gold finish, walnut stock. This pair of
guns was completed by American Gunsmith Roy Vail, one of the finest gunsmiths in the United
States during his time. Each gun in the pair was built with blued steel dovetail lump barrels featuring a
single bead sight on the hand filed game rib which is inlaid “ROY VAIL WARWICK N.Y.” in gold along with a gold
“1” or “2” at the breech, light scroll engraving at the breech, 1969 dated Liege proof marks, jeweled flats, and 3 inch
chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels of each gun are fitted to a coin finished sidelock bar-action which displays
scroll engraving surrounding a dog flushing a pair of mallards on the left and a setter flushing a pair of pheasants on the
right, both rendered in fine semi-relief gold inlays. Each gun features double triggers, hidden third fastener mixed bright
and gold action pins, a gold inlaid “1” or “2” on the trigger guard bow, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid
“S” indicator. Both guns are fitted with a nicely figured and very finely multi-point checkered beavertail forend with Anson
button release and engraved iron as well as a straight hand stock with teardrop carved drop points, three letter monogram
in the gold inscription oval, and a checkered butt. Includes a leather flat case. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore
diameter nine inches from the breech proofed at 13.7/13.8 mm (.539/.543 inches) and measured .542/.545 inches; choke
constriction .009/.010 inches; minimum wall thickness .030/.025 inches; 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 2 9/16 inch drop at heel;
14 5/8 inch length of pull; slight cast-off; weight 5 lbs. 9 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 99% original blue, coin, and gold finishes with light handling evidence. The wood is very
good with some scratches, a chip at the toe, and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good. B) Roy Vail Shotgun - Serial
no. 71164, 28 gauge, 26 inch solid rib bbl., blue/coin/gold finish, walnut stock. As described in “A”. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both
proofed at 13.4 mm (.528 inches) and measured .533/.530 inches; choke constriction .001/.000 inches; minimum wall thickness .035/.034 inches; 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 2 9/16 inch
drop at heel; 14 5/8 inch length of pull; slight cast-off; weight 5 lbs. 9 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 99%
original blue, coin, and gold finishes
with minor handling evidence.
The wood is very good with some
scratches, pressure marks, a ding at
the toe, and mostly sharp checkering.
Mechanically excellent.

Factory Engraved Abercrombie & Fitch Retailed Auguste Francotte .410 Bore “The High
Gun” Double Barrel Shotgun with Case - Serial no. 1373, 410 gauge, 26 inch
solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock.
Built with blued Siemens Martin steel barrels featuring
a single brass bead sight on the raise matted concave
game rib which is marked “THE HIGH GUN”, “A. FRANCOTTE & Co. LIEGE/MADE
IN BELGIUM” and “ABERCROMBIE & FITCH Co./SOLE U.S. AGENTS” marked on the
right and left tubes respectively, 1963 dated Liege proof marks, light engraving
at the breech, and 3 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels are
fitted to the casehardened boxlock action which displays light engraving on and
around the fasteners and “AUGUSTE FRANCOTTE/LIEGE” on the underside and
features a single trigger, Greener type crossbolt, and an automatic tang mounted safety. The gun is fitted with a lightly figured and multi-
point checkered beavertail forend with blued iron and a round semi-pistol grip stock with blank silver inscription oval and a horn buttplate.
Includes a contemporary leather motor case. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech proofed and
measured at 10.4 mm (.409 inches); choke constriction .008/.011 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 3/8 inch drop at heel; 14 5/16 inch length
of pull; weight 4 lbs. 15 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 98% original blue and casehardened finishes with light handling evidence. There is a crack near the toe and
some insect holes in the buttplate; otherwise the wood is very fine with a few light marks and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The
case is very fine with light storage type wear.
