Stunning Engraved and Silver Inlaid Pachmayr
Upgraded Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Bolt Action Rifle in .375 H&H Magnum Presented to
Elmer Keith by Frank Pachmayr with Scope - Serial no. 104326, 375 Magnum cal., 25 inch round bbl.,
blue/silver finish, walnut stock. This magnificent Pre-64 rifle
was built as a gift from one legend to another, Frank
Pachmayr to Elmer Keith. This rifle is described
in an article by Keith in the August 1976
issue of “Guns & Ammo” (an issue of which is
included), in which he details that this rifle was
made for him by Pachmayr after an “ill fated
elk hunt” they had done together, and Frank
proclaimed that he would make Keith “a real
elk rifle”. This rifle features tapered barrel with
integral hooded ramped bladed front sight, two-leaf
V-notch rear sight, standard markings with the addition
of Pachmayr’s mark, and exceptionally well-executed scroll engraving over a darkened background at the muzzle and breech
accented by lovely silver inlaid scrolling lines. The cloverleaf tang action features more of the exquisite scroll engraving with silver inlaid lines surrounding a relief
silver inlaid bugling stag on the front receiver ring and a silver bobcat on the rear along with the hand cut serial number on the left receiver rail. The action is
fitted with a matching engraved Pachmayr swing scope mount holding a Lyman All-Weather 2 1/2x scope and jeweled bolt body and follower. The bottom metal
features yet more silver accented scroll surrounding a silver relief engraved standing grizzly bear on the floorplate and a bust of a bighorn ram on the trigger
guard. In his article, Keith states that the engraving was carried out in Europe, but, unfortunately does not specify beyond that. The rifle is fitted with a stunningly
well-figured Circassian walnut pistol grip stock featuring exceptionally fine Peter Thacker executed fleur-de-lis checkering, ebony forend cap, inletted QD sling
swivels, raised cheekpiece, Winchester recoil pad, and a ebony inlaid grip cap with inlaid plaque reading “CUSTOM MADE FOR/ELMER KIETH/BY PACHMAYR/L.A.
CALIF USA.” Includes a tooled leather sling.
CONDITION: Very good as masterfully upgraded and embellished, retaining 99% blue and silver finishes with minor handling evidence on the metal. The wood is
also very good with some light dings and scratches, minor edge wear, and sharp checkering on the stock. Mechanically excellent. The scope optics are clear. A
fantastic opportunity to own a rifle gifted from one legend to another, Frank Pachmayr to Elmer Keith.
Provenance: The Elmer Keith Collection; Property of a Gentleman.
Estimate: 10,000 - 20,000
