This gun is built with blued steel barrels featuring a single nickel bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked “JOHN DICKSON. 63. PRINCES STREET. EDINBURGH.”, light engraving at the breech, chambers marked for 2 1/2 inch shells with single extractor, and later Birmingham nitro reproof marks on the flats. The casehardened rare Purdey push-forward snap action displays full
coverage scroll engraving, is marked for John Purdey’s double bolt push forward lever patent no. 1104 of May 2nd, 1863, with the use number 3375 on the

  LOT 554 Factory Engraved Joseph Land & Sons Hammer Double Rifle - Serial no. 4798, .500/.450 No.1 Black Powder Express cal., 27 7/8 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1873 per Nigel Brown’s “British Gunmakers Volume One: London”. Blued steel barrels with a beaded blade front and three leaf (one standing, two folding) rear sights on the matted solid rib, “JOSEPH LANG & SONS.” and “22 COCKSPUR STREET, PALL MALL LONDON” marked on the left and right respectively, and
correct period London black powder proofs. The casehardened Lang’s patent underlever back action has scroll engraving extending to both

Factory Engraved Isaac Hollis Jones Underlever Backaction Hammer Double Rifle in .577 Express with Case - Serial no. 55783, 577 cal., 26 5/8 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Blued steel barrels with a blade front and three leaf (one standing, two folding) rear sights on the matted solid rib which is marked “AMMUNITION - 577 - EXPRESS.” ahead of the rear sight and “I. HOLLIS & SONS. LONDON.” behind the rear sight, and
chambers with single extractor. Birmingham black powder proofs and Cordite load data on the flats indicating the rifle was used
with “nitro for black” cartridges. The casehardened Jones underlever receiver with backaction locks
displays attractive scroll engraving with “I. HOLLIS & SONS.” signed in banners on both lockplates. The rifle features rebounding hammers and dual triggers. Nicely figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with horn tip inlay and
pistol grip stock with rear sling stud, blank inscription oval, horn grip cap, and red rubber recoil pad. Includes a modern oak and leather takedown case with canvas cover, an empty box of Kynoch .577 Nitro Express cartridges, oiler, and cleaning tools. Length of pull 14 3/4 inches. Weight 11 lbs. 9 oz. CONDITION: Fine overall, retaining 98% older reapplied blue finish, attractive grey patina on the action and locks with flashes of case colors, some pitting beneath the blue, light handling evidence, and overall crisp checkering on the wood. The case is excellent. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 4,000 - 6,000
watertable, and features double triggers and non-rebounding hammers. Highly figured, checkered forend with engraved fittings and a straight grip stock with blank inscription oval and horn buttplate. The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was built with the rare Purdey push-forward snap action, 30 inch barrels with a wide 3/8 inch rib, 14 3/8 inch stock, horn
buttplate, and a weight of 6 lbs. 14 1/2 oz. and delivered on August 7th, 1875. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .727/.728 inches; choke constriction .001/.034 inches; minimum wall thickness .031/.034 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 14 3/8 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 15 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine overall as professionally refurbished, retaining 98% blue finish, attractive grey patina on the action, light handling evidence, and sharp recut checkering on the wood. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000

The left hammer is a replacement and the rifle has had the bar safeties removed from the lockplates. Nicely figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings and pistol grip stock with rear sling stud, blank inscription oval, and
casehardened steel grip cap and buttplate. Length of pull 15 3/8 inches. Weight 10 lbs. 6 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine overall as professionally refurbished, retaining 99% blue and 80% casehardened finishes, some pitting under the finish on the barrels, wood proud of much of the metal, light handling evidence, and overall crisp checkering on the wood. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000

triggers. Attractively figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend and pistol grip stock with engraved steel grip cap, blank silver inscription oval, and checkered steel buttplate.
Included is a box of 20 cartridges of assorted loadings from Safari Arms Ltd. for testing the regulation of this rifle. Length of pull 14 5/16 inches. Weight 8 lbs. 14 oz. CONDITION: Fine overall, retaining 98% reapplied blue finish and traces of case colors in the protected areas with mix of brown and grey patina on the balance, some spots of minor oxidation, light handling evidence, metal slightly proud of wood in areas, and mostly crisp checkering on the wood. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000
