Desirable Pope Customized Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Single Shot Schuetzen Rifle - Serial no. 107962, 22 LR cal., 30 inch part octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. The Cody Firearms Museum serial number verification lists this rifle with a 30 inch no. 3 half octagon barrel in .38-55 caliber, plain trigger, mid- range Vernier peep sight, windage adjustable front sight, no rear sight slot, checkered pistol grip stock, cheekpiece and Swiss buttplate when it was shipped on June 4, 1908 (sic). The rifle was later relined to .22 LR by Pope. The right receiver wall has been removed and the cut-out is marked “H.M. POPE.” The hammer has also been modified. Fitted with a globe front sight, scope blocks (partially obscures address/patent marking) on the no. 3 barrel and Lyman tang peep sight. The highly figured checkered stock has a Winchester hard rubber grip cap, cheekpiece and Swiss buttplate. CONDITION: Fine as period custom modified by Pope (see above). The rifle retains 60% of the blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. There is an area of minor pitting on the barrel. The buttplate retains 80% of the frosted nickel finish. The wood is also fine with some minor pressure dents and scratches and some wear in the checkering. The action needs work as the hammer does not hold at the half cock position. LOT 1068 Stevens Ideal “Walnut Hill” No. 49 Single Shot Target Rifle - Serial no. 3448, 25-20 cal., 30 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. The No. 49 “Walnut Hill” rifles were manufactured between around 1896 to the 1930s. This rifle was built on a No. 44 1/2 action marked “49” on the front face with elaborate engraving consisting of panels of scroll patterns and
border designs as well as a hunting dog on the left side. It has a globe front sight, tang peep sight, and double
set triggers. The barrel is marked with the two-line Stevens legend on the top flat and the caliber designation “25.20” on the bottom
flat under the forearm. The barrel and forearm are numbered to the gun. The Schnabel forearm and pistol grip stock are checkered. The buttstock has a cheekpiece and Swiss buttplate.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel retains 97% bright refinished polish blue finish with some rub wear at the muzzle. The receiver has faded to an attractive gray. The wood is also very fine with a repaired chip on the forearm (right side), some minor dings and scratches and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000

CONDITION: Fine. The barrel and buttplate retain 95% plus of the period custom refinished blue taking on an attractive plum hue. The barrel is slightly shortened. The frame retains 40% original case colors. The wood is very fine with a very faint stress line at the upper tang, some scattered minor handling marks, and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500

Exceptional Stevens A. & T. Co. No. 34 Hunter’s Pet Pocket Rifle with Matching Detachable Shoulder Stock and 1895 Receipt - Serial no. 4826, 25-10 RF cal., 18 1/2 inch octagon bbl., blue/nickel finish, metal stock, walnut grips. Around 4,000 of these rifles were manufactured c. 1872 to 1900 in a variety of barrel lengths and calibers. This rifle is accompanied by a William Read & Sons receipt dated June 20, 1895, for Doe Bros. (Fred E. and Louison W. Doe) of Bradford, Vt., indicate a Hunters Pet in .25-10 was “Sent to E.F. Smith, Putney, Vt.” The barrel has the combination globe and blade front sight, the two-line Stevens A & T Co. address and patent marking, and a folding sliding aperture and notch rear sight. The matching serial number is on the barrel latch, barrel, butt, grips (826), and shoulder stock. CONDITION: Excellent overall with 98% of the original blue, niter blue, and nickel finish and only minor wear mainly at the edge by the muzzle. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,400 - 2,250

A.O. Niedner Marked Factory Engraved Stevens Ideal “Walnut Hill” No. 49 Single Shot Target Rifle - Serial no. 30116, 22 LR cal., 27 1/8 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. The No. 49 “Walnut Hill” rifles were manufactured between around 1896 to the 1930s. This rifle was built on a No. 44 1/2 action marked “49 0” on the front face with elaborate engraving consisting of panels of scroll patterns and border designs. It has a globe front sight with spirit level, scope blocks, the two-line J. Stevens A&T Co. address/ patent dates marking (partially obscured by the rear scope block), and “22 LR” followed by “A.O. NIEDNER/MALDEN MASS.” Adolph Otto Niedner (1863-1954) was a pioneering gunsmith best known for his work on cartridges such as .22 LR and .25-06 Remington. His shop in Malden was opened in 1906.
