LOT 1517
Holland & Holland Mauser Type Takedown Bolt Action Rifle in .400/375 Belted Nitro Express - Serial no. 28043, 375 Express cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. The
included factory letter lists this rifle as a .375 caliber magnum bolt rifle with a 24 inch steel barrel, takedown select grade walnut with cheekpiece, pistol hand, sling eyes, a cap box, cast-off,
and a weight of 8 lbs. 1/2 oz. when it was completed in 1912 along with listing the stock dimensions. This rifle is chambered for the .400/375 Belted Nitro Express, a lesser known cartridge
that was built to allow for heavier firepower in a standard length action, unfortunately it released against the venerable 9.3x62 Mauser cartridge and did not have a long production life, making it quite a rare chambering.
Built with a blued steel barrel featuring a beaded blade island front sight, under mounted sling stud, three leaf (one standing, two folding) island rear sight, “HOLLAND’S/PATENT/CARTRIDGE” marked on the chamber bolster, and standard period London nitro proofs. The barrel is fitted to a Mauser style action with a matted front receiver ring showing a set screw on the right side which, when loosened, allows for the barrel to be easily removed for transport or storage. The bolt, extractor box, bottom metal, and floorplate are also all blued with the serial number on the bolt handle and triggerguard bow. The rifle is mounted with a nicely figured two piece pistol grip stock with horn forend tip, casehardened grip cap, raised cheekpiece, blank silver initial oval, rear sling
stud, and a polymer buttplate. Included with the rifle is a set of RCBS dies and assorted other
documentation including copies of the factory ledger.
CONDITION: Very fine, 95% professionally period reapplied blue finish with some lose in some of the
edges, light handling evidence, and small patches of subsurface pitting. The wood is also very fine
with scattered scratches and dings and sharp recut checkering. Mechanically excellent.
