Factory Engraved Boss & Co. Single Trigger
Hand Detachable Sidelock Double Barrel
Shotgun - Serial no. 4729, 12 gauge, 28 inch
solid rib bbl., blue/coin finish, walnut stock.
This beautiful gun was built by Boss & Co., one
of the finest makers of fine arms in the world,
in 1899 according to information given on
page 236 of Donald Dallas’“Boss & Co.: Builders
of Best Guns Only”. The gun has blued steel chopperlump barrels
featuring a single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib, barrels signed “BOSS & Co.” and “13. DOVER STREET, PICCADILLY, LONDON, W.” on the right and left respectively, engraving at the breech, original and later London proof marks, and 2 1/2 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels are mated to a coin assisted-opening sidelock action which displays extensive classic bouquet and scroll engraving surrounding “BOSS & Co.” signature banners on either lockplate “BOSS’S PATENT” at the top of both sides of the frame, and “BOSS’S./No 22894/PATENT” on the underside before extending to the triggerguard, both tangs, and toplever. The gun features a single trigger, gold centerline cocking indicators on either lockplate, a right hand rolled triggerguard, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” indicator. The gun is fitted with a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings and a gold “1” below the Anson button release, and a straight grip stock with teardrop carved drop points, a blank gold inscription oval, and Decelerator recoil pad hand marked “2 1/2”. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed at .729 inches and measured .732/.731 inches; choke constriction .009/.018 inches; minimum wall thickness .024/.021 inches; 1 11/16 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 14 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 5 lbs. 3 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent as professionally refurbished, retaining 99% blue finish with some light spotting, and slightly softened engraving. Wood is very fine with minor dings and scratches, some varnish loss at the comb and light softening of the checkering. Mechanically excellent. A great chance to own a fine gun from one of
