Large Framed Colorized L.A. Huffman Style Print “Corn Cob Cutting Out a Big Roan Cow” - This large colorized print, which
the writer believes is also sometimes referred to as “The Cowboy”, measures 14 3/4 x 33 1/2 inches where visible. The image features
a large herd of cattle being rounded up by cowboys, with the focal point in the center left being one cowboy at full gallop, cutting one animal out of the herd, with what appears to be a Montana mountain range in the background. The backing of the frame is hand marked “corn cob cutting out a big roan cow/Page 138/photo 71 B.B.W.” along with a label from the framers. It has not been confirmed through
markings, but the writer strongly believes this to be a print by L.A. Huffman. Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931) was among the few photographers to capture the landscape, Native Americans, wildlife, and ranching life in Montana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and enlarged many of his earlier photographs later in his life. CONDITION: Excellent, the image distinct and color attractively muted with only the slightest evidence of handling or wear. The frame also excellent with an attractive antique patina and only the slightest handling/storage marks. An excellent depiction of the cowboy lifestyle!
Estimate: 3,500 - 5,000
