Well-Documented One-of-a-Kind Configuration Consecutively Serialized Pair of Colt Second Generation Single Action Army Revolvers with Factory Letter -
A) Colt Second Generation Buntline Special
Single Action Army Revolver - Serial no. 53511SA, 45 LC cal., 12 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened
finish, walnut grips. Official factory shipped consecutively serialized sets of second generation Colt
Single Action Army revolvers are rarely encountered and are highly prized by modern collectors. SAA expert and author Don
Wilkerson accounts for “just over 1100” second generation SAA consecutive sets known to have been manufactured. Wilkerson
explained, “These included consecutive sets special ordered by customers and sets assembled for inventory. Most consecutive
sets consisted of two revolvers of the same calibers, barrel length and finish. A small number of consecutive sets contained
revolvers of different calibers, barrel lengths or finishes. The great majority of sets consisted of only two revolvers.” There was a
total of 784 .45 caliber consecutive sets of two standard SAAs and 48 consecutive sets of two Buntline Specials (see “Colt Single-Auction Revolver Handbook 1955-1975,” pages 38, 64 and 83). Offered here is among the rarest of the second generation SAA consecutive sets as it is the only known Buntline paired with a 4 3/4 inch nickel
SAA. A true rarity in Colt collecting that is pictured and identified in Don Wilkerson’s “Colt Single Action Revolver Handbook 1955-1957” on page 66 where it is cited as a consecutive set shipped to Doylestown, Pennsylvania on July 16, 1970 and as the only known consecutive set of revolvers in this configuration. Two copies of Wilkerson’s aforementioned book are included. This set was manufactured in 1970 and each revolver has respective standard markings and features and carry their respective matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard and back strap with the partial serial number (“511” or “510”) on the front cylinder face. An assembly number is found on the loading gate: gun “A” has the number 530” and gun “B” has the number “915.” The included factory letter for the pair of revolvers confirm the configurations and
shipment to Doylestown, Pennsylvania, as well as being ordered as a consecutively serial numbered set on Colt factory order 11887.
