Very Fine Documented Pair of Relief Chiseled and Carved Dutch Flintlock Holster Pistols by Jan Van Suilen of Amsterdam -
A) Jan Van Suilen Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 20 bore cal., 13 3/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This c. 1690 pair of Dutch holster pistols has “JAN VAN SUILEN/AMSTERDAM” signed on the rounded locks and with raised relief scroll designs on the cocks, frizzens, and barrels. The barrels are finely relief chiseled with scrollwork inhabited with serpent heads and a grotesque mask, struck at the breeches with the Utrecht city mark, and with blade front sights, sighting flats, dished and grooved rear sights on the tangs. Furniture with masks on the pommel studs and barrels, coronet designs on the pierced wrist escutcheons, and elaborate pierced scrolling side plates with bestial masks. The figured stocks have relief carving, including scroll patterns by the barrel tangs. The pair is documented on page 434 and 435 of “The Visser Collection: Vol. 1, Part 4”.
CONDITION: Fine with crisp designs and markings, mostly light gray patina, some light oxidation, and minor wear. Aside from a repaired break in the wrist, the stock is also fine and has attractive figure, distinct carving, minor edge wear, and minor
scratches. Mechanically fine. B) Jan Van Suilen Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 20 bore cal., 13
3/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. See “A.”
CONDITION: Fine with distinct markings and designs, light gray patina,
spots of minor oxidation, and generally light overall wear. The stock is also
fine and has attractive figure, distinct carving, slight loss by the pommel
cap, and light scratches. Mechanically fine.
