Very Scarce Vietnam Era North Korean Type 63 SKS Semi-
Automatic Rifle with Bayonet and Grenade Launching
Spigot - Serial no. 2209, 7.62x39 mm cal., 20 1/2 inch round bbl., blue finish, laminate stock. A rare example of a North Korean
manufactured copy of the Russian SKS-45, as originally introduced in 1963. Reportedly, a limited amount of these were exported for use by the North
Vietnamese during the Vietnam War, and surviving examples are very seldom seen on the American collector market today when compared with any other SKS
variants. No import marks are visible on this example, indicating it was likely a Vietnam War bringback. Features a hooded front post and elevation adjustable notched tangent rear sight,
integral 10-round box magazine, and fitted with a reproduction folding blade bayonet. Matching serial numbers marked on magazine floor plate, trigger guard, top cover, bolt, and left of the buttstock. The top cover is marked with circled “star” above the model type 63. Fitted with a birch handguard and laminate finger groove stock with smooth buttplate. Includes a Chinese pattern green web sling and grenade launching spigot marked with a “1” inside a star. This grenade spigot shares a strong visual similarity with the M8 grenade launching spigot as used on the U.S. M1 Carbines. This North Korean Type 63 SKS example differs from Lot 3378 in that it features a special valve with a lever on the gas block intended to prevent gas flow when used with the grenade launcher. The left of the receiver has two drilled and tapped holes, likely where a grenade launching sight once resided. North Korean Type 63 SKS rifles are rare in any form on the collector market today, and we have two examples with slight differences offered in this same auction!
CONDITION: Fine, retains 70% arsenal refinished blue finish with some areas faded to a smooth brown and a few patches of light surface corrosion/pitting as typical of a gun exposed to jungle warfare. Two drilled and tapped holes on the left of the receiver, and reproduction blade bayonet as mentioned above. The stock is also fine as arsenal refinished, with some light handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 2,500 - 3,750

Inscribed as a Korean War Trophy Bringback Presented to General Frank Farrell - Serial no. 88947, 7.62x54mmR
cal., 29 inch round bbl., blue finish, hardwood stock. A rectangular brass plaque is affixed to the right of the stock below the action
inscribed in script: “To Frank Farrell Jr./From 1 Bn 7 Cav./Tabu-dong Korea/20 Sept ‘50”. There is a General Francis (“Frank”) William Farrell who served
as commander of the Korean Military Advisory Group between 1950-1951, responsible for training and logistical support to the fledgling South Korean Army. The origin of
the presentation inscription is unconfirmed at the current time, although it coincides with the Battle of Tabu-dong that occurred between August 3rd-August 29th, 1950 between the
United Nations including the U.S. forces allied with South Korean forces against North Korean forces, in which the 7th Cavalry Regiment heavily participated in. It is likely this Mosin-Nagant rifle was confiscated from the North Korean forces, as they were supported by the Soviet Union. The rifle is “1929” dated on top of the barrel at the breech, with a hex receiver and has some parts chrome plated. Mixed serial numbers visible on the components. Absent cleaning rod.
CONDITION: Very good, retains the majority of the refinished blue and chrome finishes, with some scattered moderate freckling/corrosion and patches of light pitting visible underneath the finish. The stock is also very good as sanded and re-oiled, slightly undersized at some of the edges, with some cracks at the front end of the handguard, a reattached cracked section on the bottom of the buttstock and some light scratches. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000

Historic Documented Vietnam War Trophy Chinese Type
53 Bolt Action Carbine with Bayonet and DD603 War Registration Papers - Serial no. C4682, 7.62x54 R
cal., 20 1/2 inch round bbl., brown/grey finish, birch stock. The Chinese Type 53 carbine was effectively an exact copy of the Soviet
M44 Mosin-Nagant carbine. As China adopted more advanced SKS and AK pattern rifles, the older Mosin-Nagant based longarms ended
up in second line service, as well as being slated for export, with many becoming part of North Vietnam’s inventory. A set of February 20, 1971 dated DD603 registration
documentation is made out for this item as a “SHICOM CARBINE TYPE 53 W/ BAYONET 7.63MM,” identifying it by serial number as a war trophy and personal property of Master
Sergeant Donald Sheffer, originally of Phoenix, Arizona, attached to “AELS, HQ MACV APO” in the Republic of Vietnam. The carbine features a hooded pin front sight and notched tangent rear sight, with a triangle enclosed “26” factory mark and “1960” dated chamber. Fitted with a hinged side-folding bayonet and a straight wrist stock with a flat buttplate.
CONDITION: Fair, showing wear and tear consistent with other documented Vietnam War trophies. Most of the metal surface has turned a mixed brown and gray patina, with original blue visible on recessed areas, along with mild spotting and light handling marks. The wood is also fair, with discoloration, rounding of the toe, and mild scuffs. Action is loose in stock and rear sight spring is broken. Mechanically functions fine otherwise.
Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500
