German Ludwig Loewe Model 1893 Borchardt Semi-
Automatic Pistol Rig with Shoulder Stock, Case, and
Accessories - Serial no. 806, 7.65 mm Borchardt Auto cal., 7 1/2
inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. Manufactured c. 1893-
1896 by the firm of Ludwig Loewe (subsequently DWM) in Berlin,
Germany. The Model 1893 was the work of Hugo Borchardt,
formerly the Superintendent of Sharps Rifle Manufacturing
Company, and was among the first viable semi-automatic pistol
designs to hit the commercial market. The Borchardt Pistol was
also an important forerunner to the work of Georg Luger, who
would refine the core mechanical principles of the Borchardt
toggle lock system to make his own eponymous and world
famous handgun. Fixed blade and notch sights, with “WAFFENFABRIK/LOEWE/BERLIN.” marked on top of the chamber, and the patent marking “D.R.P./No 75837.” on the front toggle link. Niter blue and straw colored small parts,
and checkered hardwood grips with smooth borders. Matching visible serial numbers on bottom of the frame, stock lug, trigger, interiors of the grips, and on the walnut base of the nickel finished magazine. Includes a modern
leatherette case with green felt lined fitted interior, a shoulder stock and cheek rest both stamped with number “806” to match, leather holster attached to the stock, dummy wooden magazine containing a brass oiler/hammer
combination tool, oil bottle, Vaseline tin, cleaning rod, screwdriver, key, and also includes a rare professionally made reproduction Ludwig Loewe & Co. Borchardt manual that was reportedly from the noted collection of David Eash.
CONDITION: Very fine overall as professionally restored by Gale Morgan, retains 98% plus blue finish, 98% straw colors and 95% niter blue on the small parts, with enhanced markings, some minor handling marks on the grips and
well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. Stock is also very fine as restored, with some light scratches, and much of the blue finish. Case is fine.
Estimate: 14,000 - 20,000
