Stunning, Rare and Fresh Factory Engraved and Relief Gold Inlaid Charles Daly Diamond Quality Double Barrel
Shotgun - Serial no. 2050, 12 gauge, 28 1/4 inch solid rib bbl., blue/gold finish, walnut stock. Built around the turn of the 20th
century and retailed by Schoverling, Daly, & Gales of New York. The gun has blued Whitworth Fluid Steel barrels featuring a single
bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked “Made for Leonard I. Carleton by Charles Daly” in gold along with a
gold inlaid mallard in flight and a flourish of scroll engraving. The barrels are marked with both German and London proof marks
as well as a “sheaf of wheat” mark on either tube indicating Whitworth’s steel and small “BOSS” markings on either tube, indicating
gun was barreled by Boss & Co. of London. The barrels are equipped with 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels
are fitted to the blued scalloped boxlock action with raised side panels which is marked “PRUSSIA” on the watertable and displays
near full coverage scroll engraving surrounding “CHARLES DALY” banners on either side, shell pattern carved fences, and a relief
gold inlaid trio of ducks on the underside. The gun features a scarce single trigger, safety mounted beside the trigger, cocking
indicators, and two separate barrel selectors on the upper tang with gold inlaid indicators. The gun is fitted with a beautifully
figured and fancy checkered splinter forend with engraved blued iron Anson push-rod release as well as a pistol grip stock with
checkered, carved, and fish scale bordered flats, blued and fully engraved grip cap, and a hard rubber buttplate.
