The original owner of this gun, Leonard Carleton, was a famed gun collector from
Rockford, Illinois, in the early 20th century. A 1909 article in “The Freeport Daily
Bulletin” lists many of Carelton’s treasures and states that they are all marked
in gold just as this example is, and further specifically mentions a Charles Daly
shotgun. Carleton was heralded as having the finest collection of sporting arms in
the world at the time of the article with pieces from all of the great makers.
Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech
.730/.731 inches; choke constriction .034/.015 inches; minimum wall thickness
.024/.025 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 inch drop at heel; 14 7/8 inch length
of pull; weight 7 lbs. 8 oz.
CONDITION: Excellent showing 95% plus original blue finish overall with some
thinning at the muzzle and high points and gentle collector type handling marks.
The stock is excellent showing an old refinish with a tiny crack at the left of the
stock head and a few casual handling marks. Mechanically excellent. A stunning
piece “sporting gun” high art from the world class collection of industry titan
Frank Brownell.
