The details of this rifle are unmatched, down to the signature of John
Ulrich and the hand checkering of the wood. The engraving on this rifle
is by Turnbull’s in-house engraver, Tom McArdle, who has reproduced
John Ulrich’s engraving on the original Roosevelt ‘76 in stunning detail,
with both McArdle’s signature and a recreation of Ulrich’s signature found
behind the trigger. The engraving exhibits four panel scenes on the
receiver, a bison and antelope on the right and two bucks on the left, as
well as a bear scene engraved on a oval gold plate inlaid in the right of the
stock. The scenes on the receiver are surrounded by typical Ulrich style
scrollwork and gadrooned borders, with the scrollwork continuing on
the hammer, lever, bottom of the cartridge elevator, dust cover, and the
buttplate. The top barrel flat is marked with the standard two-line address
and King’s patent marking. The caliber marking is hand engraved on the
bottom of the cartridge elevator. The model marking is on the upper tang.
The two engraver’s signatures are on the lower tang behind the trigger,
and the special “TR 03” serial number is engraved at the tail of the lower
tang. It is fitted with a brass-beaded blade front sight and a folding leaf
“FREUND” marked notch rear sight. It is mounted with a very finely figured,
H-pattern checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a lightly engraved
steel grip cap, the previously mentioned engraved gold plate inlaid in the
right of the stock, a cheekpiece on the left of the stock, and a coarsely
checkered and engraved steel shotgun buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 98% of the blue finish with a few extremely
small patches of light surface spotting/oxidation, and 98% of the vibrant
case colors with just a few small patches of light flaking
and extremely crisp engraving overall. The wood is near
new with only the slightest handling marks and crisp checkering.
Mechanically excellent. This is an incredibly detailed recreation of Teddy
Roosevelt’s Model 1876, one of the most legendary Winchester rifles in
existence, and would be a welcome addition to any collection of fine 19th
century American arms!
Provenance: The Frank Brownell Collection.
Estimate: 9,500 - 16,000
